Currently I’m working out of a partial garage. HOA restrictions make it so I cannot build a better shop… Until recently I haven’t had time to set it up properly, so a lot is “In progress” still…
My “shop” is L shaped, it started life as a 2 car garage that a previous owner built a storage room taking up 3/4 of one side. The building is a duplex and the room is included with the other side of the property, my side has what remains of the garage.
Down the left wall is a basic storage bench built from 2×4’s and 1/2” ply going from about 2’ from interior door to about 3/4 of the way to the garage door. The 2’ space next to the interior door is home to my air compressor. Currently this bench is home for my drill press, bandsaw, grinders, and a lot of junk… The rest of the space is a very large (double mechanic’s) tool box.
Currently the place is cluttered with boxes of stuff, I’m slowly sorting, tossing, and moving out of there. When I get done finding new homes for all the junk my lathe will go down at the far end (about where the storage bench starts) and I’ll re-mount my grinders behind the lathe. Speaking about the lathe, it’s on a cart I built with locking casters, my current lathe is a bilt hard 10×18” with a morphon extension bed that allows up to 39” between centers.
The right wall has some of that wire shelving commonly found in closets, but I plan to replace that with better storage. In the center is my building space… Right now I’ve been building on the floor, but a new workbench is in progress. In the middle of the space At the end of the right wall before the L section is where my table saw / router sits, also a cart on castors. The table saw is a basic 10” Ryobi, and the router is a mid sized craftsman (1.5 hp 1/4” collet). At the corner the bandsaw (9” craftsman) and drill press (8” harbour freight) will get a custom spot made. Down the L will be another storage bench and will also be home to the miter saw. And as much storage as I can fit in there…

Sounds like a good start, in a decent space.

I remember having to move my tools for years before I finally got my own place. I think those times tests our dedication to the craft.

Hope you get plenty of time to make use of it…

Welcome.

If you post pics here be sure to edit and resave them first to prevent them from uploading sideways. This is a known issue here.
