Hey everyone. I’m finishing up a small black walnut bench top. My question is what recommendations can you give regarding the poly application? I want to keep the bark on the live edge but this was air dried vs kiln so I want to see if there’s any particular prep you recommend before applying the layers of poly I plan on doing?

If the bark is firmly on, it may not have air dried long enough. Regardless, you should likely epoxy it vs poly so you are adding a better bonding agent to encourage the bark to stay on after finishing.

Here is a discussion about this very idea: https://www.reddit.com/r/woodworking/comments/b5ejjn/do_you_remove_or_keep_the_bark_on_a_live_edge/

Good luck. I love the way walnut smalls when you work it.

Have your say...
