Finish for reclaimed oak - 4 replies

Building a couple wine racks out of old reclaimed red oak flooring. Between old finish, wood filler, and glue squeeze out I am confident that anything I put on this has a good chance of looking blotchy. I don’t particularly want to stain or change the color or the wood, but I do want to seal it and hopefully keep the tannins from blackenin...

Tablesaw tripped breaker - 26 replies

So I want to chalk this up to it just being too hot outside but it has me paranoid enough that I want some lumberjock second opinions. Was using a dado stack on my tablesaw cutting about 3/4” wide by 1/4” deep rabbet on the end of a piece of oak. Width of the oak was about 2” and I had just finished ripping a small pile of t...

Do you seal coat - 1 reply

I am about to start a project that the customer wants a clear finish over maple. My inclination is to pre-finish all the materials with 2 coats of GF high performance satin and a final coat after assembly. Since there will be no staining is there any reason to do a base coat with either an acrylic sealer or shellac?

Dream shop and laundry - 16 replies

So I have been planning out my post retirement dream shop for a while now and I am at the phase where certain details are making enough sense to become a plan rather than just a dream. I have been gathering lots of drawings, materials costs, permit requirements, etc. and sharing them with my wife while I plan this out along with a list of things...

Shopsmith MarkV - 0 replies

If anyone is in the Baltimore/Annapolis Maryland area and looking for a Shopsmith, I am selling mine. Has the Jointer, Scroll Saw, Bandsaw, Belt Sander attachments along with the stock items for the Drill Press, Lathe, and Tablesaw. This unit has a 1980 MFG date and is in good condition. Honestly has has almost no use in probably the past ...

Jet 1236/HF 34706 Handwheel - 1 reply

So I had ordered a handwheel from amazon for my HF lathe, PN 708344, and after a month or so of waiting for it to ship I got the email that it is no longer available. The handwheel from other sources is a fair bit more than what the Amazon one was. My intention was to drill the center of the handwheel for the knockout bar to fit through and see ...

Question for those of you who do resin and wood casting. - 4 replies

I have done some resin casting of pen blanks with mixed in scraps or exotic. I would like to try casting some blanks for small bowls/weedpots that include burl caps. Everywhere I typically deal with sells only larger burl pieces. Where is a good place to look for smaller burl cap cutoffs to experiment with?

Tool storage during transition - 1 reply

Question for any of you that have gone from an existing shop to making your own dream shop. What did you do with all your stuff during the transmission? In the next few years I plan on breaking ground on my own pole barn dream shop, but my existing shop building will need to be torn down for that. I expect to have to do some significant downsizi...

Selling my Shopsmith, price fair? - 11 replies

I have a Mark V 500 from 1980 best I can tell. It has the Bandsaw, Jointer, Belt sander, Scroll saw, a 10” and a 12” disk sanding attachment (no clue why it has both), and I think what was the standard drill press, tablesaw, and lathe attachments for its time. I cleaned it up and tested everything and seems to be working as intended....

Letting the smoke out - 2 replies

My old Black and Decker 3×21 belt sander made a horrible noise today while using it to debur some aluminum I cut. Figured it was probably toast, its at least 10 years old and owes me nothing, but figured id pull it apart and see whats what anyway. Both shields on one of the bearings were trashed. Was a 608 and I have a handful of them and f...

Blast Gate control problem - 9 replies

So I had what I thought was a good idea that has proven not to work well at all. Maybe some of the collective creativity here can help me save this. I made some 6” blast gates that open and close on a pivot based off this design: Above the pivot point I have a piece of steel barstock tha...

Retractable casters - 6 replies

I have been brainstorming how I want to design my workbench and as much as I want it to be fixed I don’t see any way I can swing that without getting rid of tools or moving into a larger shop. So I have been looking into how I can make it mobile when needed and very stable when where I want it. Looking at the retractable casters that are m...

Blast gate finish - 2 replies

I am building some 6” blast gates out of MDF because I have it. I was thinking of just giving them a good coating of past wax to seal them a but and keep them moving well. My other thoughts are shellac or BLO. Any opinions on what would work out the best?

Workbench wood species opinion - 22 replies

I know a lot of folks make workbench tops more economically using 2x douglas fir from the big box stores. I wanted to know how many of you have been happy with that as a long term workbench vs having that as a temporary workbench until rebuilding with a hardwood was possible? I am primarily a power tool woodworker, but hoping to grow a bit wi...

Tool selling advice - 6 replies

In the near future I will be selling my cabinet saw and accessories and I and debating on if it would do better to sell them as a set or individually. Here are the items I need to clear out: Older Grizzly G1023RLWX 5hp single phase with 7’ rails and ShopFox Classic fence. This older version does not have a riving knife. Excalibur 60&...
