I work in the biomass to energy field in a company I started a couple of years ago. I have a wonderful and tolerant wife and 2 sons who love to play with daddy in the workshop.
Last Summer I built a sandbox out of 4 X 4s and since then I haven't been able to stop. Right now I am working on getting my shop cabinets & benches to a level I am happy with. Once that's accomplished, I will feel qualified to move on to wife-level furniture.
I believe there is almost no case to be made for compromising on tool quality. Cheap tools bit me in the ass early & often. That said, I almost never buy new stuff - Craigslist is the best.
I believe that, in the workshop, form is nearly important as function. The right workspace fosters creativity & productivity. Count me in the crowd that sees the workbench as part tool part work of art.
