no previous part Part 1 of Tongue Drum series no next part

I am in the process of making my first tongue drum. Got the Poplar box and Red Oak tone board made, needs lot of work still, and a bottom yet. But the 3/4” red oak tone board doesn’t make much sound and three of the 12 keys sound dead. Don’t understand what’s happening? It doesn’t rattle or buzz, just thump, no tone, well, not a pleasant one anyway. Sure could use some insight or help figuring out what’s happened?

It’s funny, the two keys along one edge are almost the same length, don’t ask me how that happened because I don’t know – I used a paper pattern, go figure. And even though they are the same length they make different sounds. But none of the keys are very loud at all; in fact the tones are quite soft. No tuning yet either, but the tongues have been slightly sanded.

The tongue drum is about 18” long by 8.75” wide by 7.25” tall.
