What's the highest useful grit on a stationary belt sander? - 27 replies

I just picked up a combo belt/disk sander off CL. (9 inch disk + 6×48 belt, 1 hp motor, weight 93 pounds, it’s a beast). It came with 80 and 100 grit belts and disks. I’m going to order some higher grits, but I’m not sure how high to go. I’ll mainly be using it for stock removal and shaping, so the 80 and 100 will g...

Sharpen your blades using your table saw? - 5 replies

I don’t know, I just ran across this video on youtube of a guy using a diamond blade on his table saw to sharpen his table saw (or circular saw, or scms) blades using a diamond blade. Cracked me up. Thought it might generate some comments. Maybe this has been around the block before and I just missed it? Anyway, check it out.

Yet another "which spokeshave should l buy" question! - 18 replies

I’m planning on buying a spokeshave to use mainly (at first, anyway) for making wooden spoons, which my daughter is suddenly keen on. I could schlepp down to the big box and get a POS $17 deal, tune it up, and call it good. I’m somewhat reluctant to go to the other end of the spectrum and get a Veritas low angle, as I’m not s...

Best technique to round over tenons? - 9 replies

I’m doing my first mortise and tenon piece, and I’m wondering what different techniques people use to round over tenons when making mortises with a router (1/4 inch in this case). My thought was to use a flush cut saw to cut a kerf at the shoulder of the tenon then use a chisel to split/shave off a 45 degree chamfer, starting at the ...
