Designing a Piece of Furniture

I made this cherry match veneer round piece with compass point in a veneering class a couple of years ago. I've had it stored away ever since.

I'm having trouble visualizing the piece of furniture (purpose, design, style, etc.) that needs to be built around this piece. It's been perculating in the back of mind and consciousness for a long time and nothing has yet materialized.

I thought I would toss these pictures out there and see if any of you might have a thought - a sketch - a style suggestion - something beyond my "box" - that I could throw into the hopper of my conscious and subconscious mind. I even resisted calling it a "top" in the title and this blog so I wouldn't confine myself to a table. (Although I could use it, I suppose, as a starting point for the SketchUp challenge.) Considering the projects stacked up in my shop, it will still be a while before I could pull it out and do anything with it. So there's time for more creative "brooding" and "perculating."

Any thoughts? suggestions?

a clock; a wall hanging; a door to a unique wall storage unit; a medallion from which hangs a light; a lazy susan; a table top; ... I ran out of ideas.

this is GORGEOUS. Personally, it would be hanging on my wall "as is". Absolutely stunning!
I can also see hands on it, for a clock, making sure I disrupted the beauty as little as possible.

Paul,

It's too nice to put any where but on a top. The question is top of what? You don't say the size, but from the breaker box, I'd guess about 18". Maybe a table is the best. Why not do 4 smaller ones for the corners Then inlay this in the center. glue it all down to a substrate and edge band it with a mitered corner band about 3-4 inchs wide. That sounds like the dining room talbe I want to build minus the inlays of course. Or maybe I just need to learn one more thing. It is really pretty.
Good luck,
Tom

Okay! Now we're cookin'!!!!

This is why collaboration - team work - real community is the way to go!

Isn't it amazing that sometimes the obvious just eludes you. All I could come up with was flat - some kind of four legged round thing - it was ugly, even in my imagination!

Single pedestal - tilt top - octagonal . . . I'm getting excited. What other possibilities? Seems too ornate for a Shaker style tilt top. I'm not versed in correctly identifying historical furniture styles, what other styles should I look at?

Not history in the sense of being chained to it, but in the sense that it gives us a common language to describe design elements - i.e like "ball and claw" that's a historical design element that is different than the simple plain style of "Shaker"
