« Part 6: Frisage / Parquetry Part 7 of Treasure Box III - Post series Part 8: Mechanisms »

Just a quick post on veneering on that type of boxes.

It is very similar to what happend in Treasure Box 1 and 2 so you can have more details there if you want to.

Each side of the box has a central panel of marquetry that is “framed” by a banding and string inlays.

On this project the inside and the outside were veneered. The marquetry panel centered. Then the inside was finished before glueing the box. This alowes to have crisp french polished corner. Using hide glue, in this instance Old Brown Glue, the clean up is easy and the finish left pristine.

Then the marquetry panel is cut and the banding added. In this case, pewter brass and ferreol.

Glad to see an update of your splendid work! At least when I drool over your work, it doesn’t send me to the kitchen like when I drool over someone’s culinary achievements. Yours isn’t fattening! And while I can sometimes achieve some pretty good replicas of special recipes, I can’t make a good box, much less something of your caliber.
