Wood carver of over 60 years, some limited "woodworking" experience, though there's a point at which the two activities merge and I've crossed over the line several times in projects.

Though I've done some two dimensional projects (Pyrography (wood and leather), water and oil painting, I tend to find the two dimensional projects boring! I have designed a number of monographs, which I have used to ID my projects, as well to enhance others.

Most of my early projects would be classified as whittling, with increasing use of mallets and gouges as my skills (available time and wealth) increased. At this point in my life I'd consider myself as a "talented" but no longer "driven" wood carver, and certainly not, .. ABSOLUTELY NOT .. an "artist." I would consider that label an insult.

I will post some of my work on line (here) but the number of my projects would bore even me in trying to go through them.

I look for ideas on line, but I no longer use patterns I find interesting without modification, often to the point that the original design is unrecognizable.

My intent on displaying the latest picture was to show that being restricted to materials, designs (simple or complex) provided by other carvers or others perception of “art”, “Art” or even “Craftsmanship” is limiting! It’s what you (not others) find appealing and inspiring! Think beyond the box, find new approaches, use new materials, etc. God (and nature) have provided you with the tools (mind and body) to find joy in life. Life is short, don’t waste it!

Have your say...
