I come from a long line of woodworkers on both sides of my family. The blocks I played with as a small kid were from the scrap box in my grandfather's cabinet shop. My brothers and I were born with sawdust in our veins.....
I enjoy many aspects of woodworking, with a strong leaning toward the traditional (hand and foot) methods. The old ways are pretty darned quick and efficient. I can often get a molding cut with a few swipes of a hand plane before my oldest brother can get his router set out and set up..... Besides which, there is a more personal interaction with the wood when using traditional tools that I personally enjoy. That's not to say I don't use power tools when it's most expedient to do so, I just enjoy adding the old ways into the mix when possible.

This being President’s Day, I am reminded of an incident which occurred fifty years ago. Back then, we called it “George Washington’s Birthday”. Most retail establishments had “sales” on Washington’s Birthday. My parents took me along with them to shop at a furniture store. A salesman was stationed just inside the vestibule of the store. His assignment on that day was to hand out HATCHETS to any kid who came into the store. Yes, hatchets. Granted, it was “dull as a froe”, but it was a hatchet, nonetheless. Can you imagine such a thing in today’s world?
That hatchet was in the family for years before getting lost in a move. No, I never did chop down a cherry tree with it. LOL

Have your say...
