i caught the bug, and have had woodlust for just over a year and a half. i hand carve wooden spoons, bowls, and other kitchen utensils, although i definitely wish to expand, and broaden my carving horizons.
i use mostly hardwoods, and burls when i can get my hands on them. i got my start while living in northern humboldt county. while i was there i met a man, who turned out to be a good friend, who tears down 100+year old barns that are constructed out of old-growth redwood, and repurposes the lumber into high end funiture. he was commissioned to make a couple hundred spoons and spatulas, and didnt have time to do the project due to deadlines with current projects at the time. so, he put me to work on the spoons and spatulas. he handed me a couple templates he had made, and turned me loose in the shop. after inspecting my first spoon and spatula, he told me, "man, these are nicer than the first ones i made, maybe you ought to go into buisness for yourself!" so i did. and havent looked back since. so i owe my love for woodworking not only to my good friend jereme, but also to the beauty and splendor of old-growth redwood. if you havent ever worked with old-growth redwood, i highly recomend it. it is so very beautiful, and has so much variety.
