Any ideas on how to salvage a bad glue-up? - 9 replies

I glued up this dresser top valet and didn’t notice that an unsupported side had been squeezed in with a clamp. I made this from a piece of white oak firewood and have quite a few hours invested in it and would hate to toss it in the burn bin. Would somehow dampening the side part and “pulling” it out allow it to be straighten...

SPAM - 30 replies

Has anyone else received this message: Looks suspiciously like the ever-ubiquitous and unwanted Ted’s Woodworking spammers at work again. Seems like they actually went to the trouble of opening an LJ acccount in order to ply their wares . . .

Coffee table lamp design - literally! - 2 replies

On weekends, when the weather is nice, my wife and I often walk to a nearby neighborhood coffee shop for a cup ‘o Joe. This morning when we were there, I saw them getting ready to dispose of this huge coffee canister and I asked what they were going to do with it. The answer was that they were just going to throw it in the trash. Uh uh. ...

Sawstop JSS - wasting my time? - 11 replies

I have had a Sawstop JSS for about two and a half years. It has been a good saw to learn on and I don’t regret the purchase, but I am beginning to see its shortcomings. I can’t seem to get a perfectly square cross cut, despite using a crosscut sled and/or an Incra 1000 miter gauge. The one thing I haven’t done yet is to buy ...

Chair arm repair - 13 replies

Not sure if this post belongs here or elsewhere, but hoping for some help. I need to fix the arm of this chair before Christmas dinner on Tuesday afternoon or face the wrath of you know who. Question 1: I plan to dowel the joint, but there is not a lot of meat in the top position. I am concerned about the strength of the joint when there may on...

Attaching hairpin legs to side table - 14 replies

I want to attach three hairpin legs to an 18” round tabletop. The top is 3/4” thick walnut. Connecting each leg requires five screws and the plate is around 1/8” thick. I’m concerned that 3/4” screws will come dangerously close to the table’s surface, but that using shorter screws might not hold well. Sho...

Secret Recipe v General Finishes and Danish v BLO - 9 replies

I know the topic of tabletop finishes has been explored ad nauseum here and I have gone through past posts, but I can’t seem to find a definitive answer on a couple of things (or maybe I’m just being indecisive!). I’m getting ready to apply finish to a walnut side table and I’m looking for as natural, yet as durable, a f...

End grain on circular table top edge - 10 replies

Hey folks, new guy here and hoping to tap into some of the infinite wisdom of the group. I’m working on a claro walnut side table with a circular top. I cut out the circle with a spiral upcut router bit and circle jig, and rounded over the top and bottom edges – all good. When I went to sand the table edge, I noticed that where t...
