Before I ever quit drinking and dabbled in woodworking (been a year now of woodworking… a year and two months of no drinking!)... well, before all of that, I was a writer.

I guess I still am a writer, but haven’t written anything new in awhile. I wrote two novels in the first 9 months of the pandemic, and that kinda took writing out of me for awhile (though one of those two books is slated to be published from a small press).

But… back to the point of this post. During the pandemic, it was very difficult to market my new book. It came out in June of 2020, so there was no chance for book signings or giving public readings. That left all my marketing to the internet… and yet another little known writer hawking his book on Twitter (meaning very few sales).

I did give some Zoom readings and, though somewhat well-attended, they never resulted in many book sales. There’s just something about having physical books to sell to a physical audience that makes for more sales.

Ok, what does this have to do with woodworking? Well, ever since I started doing some art fairs, in addition to my woodworking, I’ve been bringing some copies of my books. And, they’ve sold! Ok, not a ton, but I think people are glad to see something under $30 on the table.

If you are a reader, you can check out a couple of my books:

This is my latest collection of short stories that Amazon has available for under $6, which means I probably make 13 cents on each sale. Not sure why they’ve discounted it so much… maybe I’m in an Amazon bargain bin?

If you’re not into short stories, there’s also my novel, Detroit Muscle. It’s about a kid who gets out of rehab, returns to Michigan, and tries to make amends. He ends up taking a road trip with his grandfather from Detroit to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The grandpa’s name is Otto (in a symbolic sense he represents the auto industry)... I could see him being a character many of you would like:

In any case, if you end up doing some shows, and you are an author too… bring copies of your books for your table!

Fantastic Jeff!
I had been to your website and knew you’re a writer but had no idea about publishing two books.
Congratulations are in order, for the books and for being sober 14 months. Also the new “hobby” which I think is a great way to express yourself along with writing. Seems like you’ve found another outlet for self expression.
Keep it all up!!!

Jeff – I have followed with interest some of your pursuits. I particularly appreciate that you have added your writing skills to this site. As noted in my signature line, the skills and experiences we discuss are expressed in words as well as photos. We need to do that carefully just as we do with our tools.

-- You know, this site doesn't require woodworking skills, but you should know how to write.

Thanks, Phil. I sometimes worry that my write-ups are a little too verbose!
