Lowes Run... Boon or am I a sucker?

So, I’ve had some pretty positive reactions to the Ambrosia Maple I’ve found at my local Lowes. Some have expressed disbelief at the quality and the low price.

As a result, I went back. They still had quite a few of my 8 foot/$10 dollar boards. But, this time I looked at the 8 foot boards next to them, which were 6 inches across… much bigger.

I culled through about 15 boards and pulled the ones with the most patterned grains from end to end. I ended up with four. Now, these are quite a bit wider than the Ambrosia Maple boards I had been plucking (6 inches across versus an inch and a half or so)

The four boards (32 feet worth) cost me $110.

So, Lumber Jocks opinion… did I do good or get over zealous and get screwed?

Here are some pics:

Lumber prices vary around the country, so what’s a good deal one place might be a fair deal another.

Figuring board-feet, the 1 1/2” x 8 ft pieces are 1 board foot. At $10, that’s about average. Your 6” by 8 ft boards are 4 board-feet each, so four of them add up to 16 board-feet, and at $110 you paid just under $7 per board-foot, which in my neck of the woods is a good deal. Not a steal, but definitely good.

You certainly did not get screwed.

My thought is “it’s all relative.”

How much value can or will you get out of it… A lot of us never really make it pay to work the wood… That’s why you have to love it…

Good luck…

I wish my Lowe’s carried ANY maple! I’d say you did well, but I’m a wood hoarder so there’s that.

Like Rich already said – $7 a bdft is a more than fair price for ambrosia maple. That’s why I don’t have any and also why I like Craig’s List.

Agree with above: $7/bf for S4S Ambrosia Maple is a fair deal. I’m jealous that you can get any Maple at Lowes. The only choices at the ones around here are Poplar, Oak and Pine.

Thanks, everyone! In truth, if I’m using the boards the way I imagine (probably clock faces) then that wood will go a long way.

I saw where my Home Depot also had some maple… not Ambrosia, but maple.

Ok, my wife saw the wood… she’s talking coffee table.

And, for the legs of the table, I have this idea of using two chairs, tipped on their sides.

Looked on-line at my local store and they have it listed as 1/2” thickness – is that what you got?

Have your say...
