Part 1: It starts...

I’ve wanted to build a workshop for about the last 5 years now. Well, the time has finally come to make that happen. I’m not this guy, and my house only sits on just shy of 1/4 acre so this can’t be some monster 40×60 shop. Instead, it will be a 12×16 gable shed. I don’t have a shop to speak of right now and this is bigger than an I was expecting my wife to approve so while this isn’t a dream shop for most, it’s a dream come true for me...

Part 2: Some progress

Well, it’s built. I didn’t plan out my excavation as well as I should have (rather, I didn’t execute it as well as I should have) so I’ve got quite a bit of work to do, still. I’m chipping away at this, slowly but surely. I’ve got the walkway around the shop dug out and the most important part of the retaining wall is up. I’m in the process of digging out and framing in the steps and still need to lay out the gravel in the walkway. Once all of the world’s trees finish depositing every one of their leaves in my yard, I’ll clean everything up and put down the gravel. The holidays are fast approaching and my “free time” is...

Part 4: Some fun progress

So, I had a birthday back in October and my wife surprised me with this… It’s a great gift and a really awesome surprise. In addition to that guy, I bought a 4-bulb fluorescent light fixture and a small infrared heater so that I can work in the shop after about 4pm and while it’s cold. The little white plastic jobby in the previous picture is the barely adequate infrared heater. It was $25 at Lowes and is supposed to be good for supplemental heating for u...

Part 5: I'm so lazy

I intended to get working on my shop again once the weather warmed up. I expected February to bring some warm weather but the freakish winter didn’t let that happen. When the weather finally did warm up enough, I had to focus on getting my garden in or not have much of one this year. I came up with more and more excuses to put off working on the outside of the shop (you may or may not remember there’s all kinds of digging involved). Well, that hasn’t changed. Every chan...
