no previous part Part 1 of Project: Woodshop series no next part

I moved into this house a decade ago, plus a few weeks. It has a 3 car garage, so naturally the third bay was storage, but I wanted it to become a woodshop. I picked up random tools off craigslist and friends, lucked into quite a lot of ash from a fallen tree, and then… my second and third kids were born and my time went poof.

Well, evidently the pandemic has stirred something up. My wife wanted to build a pocket-hole & 2×4 lofted bed for middle child, so we started cleaning out the garage. I kick more and more stuff out of the garage to make room. I organize and reorganized. The old truck is now officially an Outside Truck. Woodshop gets 2 bays of the garage!

Of course, every single machine needs cleaning and aligning and squaring. The table saw came from a furniture maker friend, and it had sat unused in the garage for like 5 years, so it was pretty gnarly. Elbow grease did pretty well though.

And my wife wants a bookcase, so I’m building a bookcase. Hopefully not biting off more than I can chew.

I’m using some of the ash for the project. So far, so good, though I am finding the limitations of the equipment I have. My planer snipes something awful, regardless of how I tweak it… so I have to be really careful to lift up as the boards come out. The bandsaw won’t cut straight to save my life (even with a brand new blade on it). I’ve turned the table as far as it’ll go to try to compensate… new tires ordered to replace the ones that are likely original to the 25 year old saw. The jointer has chips in the knives… I should really see if they can be flipped or if I need new ones.

But despite all that, I’m making some sawdust. And it’s super fun.

I sit all day at a computer for my job, so it’s nice to get out and make something physical with my hands. I only get a couple hours a night, after the kids are in bed, but it’s all coming along slowly. Maybe I’ll even finish the bookcase before my wife gives up and just buys one online.

Good luck and Godspeed, and always remember tools begat tools. One day they’ll outnumber you and take your life much money
