Need a new planer with a small footprint - 16 replies

Looking to buy a new planer for my home shop, which is 3/4 of a 1 car garage, so a small footprint is a must. I do a fair amout of work at home, so it will need to run for hours on end. Is there an American made brand that stands out above the rest? prefer to look at old American iron first if possible – though they tend to run on t...

Fair price for found wood? - 42 replies

Encountered every woodworker’ s wildest dream: nearly unlimited free wood! There’s just one problem, I literally couldn’t store another matchstick in my already too small garage and my woodshed is literally bursting at the seams (Had a shelf collapse under the weight of 10/4 walnut slabs!). I gotta cull my inventory a bit, b...

Australian Cypress - 2 replies

Worked on a job utilizing this species recently. Looks like a knotty pine, very brittle but easy to work, which brings to the question: this stuff smelled amazing. Like a perfume that I definitely want my wife to wear. FFW to today. Had a few more boards come in and whenI went to mill it, the smell was completely gone. .Does this stuff always...

Uses for Xylene - 13 replies

Any value to xylene other than as a solvent for cleanup? I have a can of it and was wondering if it might work as a thinning agent for spraying clear coat poly.

Dear Penthouse... - 5 replies

You read letter after letter , never believing it could happen to you and then one day, you see the boss hurl this gorgeous plank into a dumpster. 5/4×18.375×10’4.25” goncolo alves. Giggity.

Warped panel, removing it with finish on one side? - 2 replies

Glued up an ash panel and had to set it aside for a few weeks in an unheated garage. During that time, it picked up a 1/8” bow. I’ve been told if I were to oil one side and not the other, it might pull the bow back closer to flat. Any truth to this?

Need to remove plugs - 13 replies

Outdoor bench pulled itself apart, so I’ll need to break it down and rebuild it. Only problem is that I covered the screw holes with plugs. Anyone have a tip/trick for removing glued in plugs covering screws?

Any Union guys out there? - 46 replies

While I enjoy working as a bench carpenter in a custom shop, the cash is…less than ideal. Wondering how many guys here do the 7-3:30 M-Fas a union carpenter and then do fine woodworking in their spare time.

Acetone as a lacquer thinner. Ratios? - 5 replies

Got tossed into the mix in the finishing dept today and will need to work solo. Rather than pester the experienced guys in our shop, I was hoping to tap the LJ hive mind for some advice. I need to finish a piece of white oak. Doing 3 coats of sealer and 3-4 coats of lacquer. I just got done the second sealer coat and wanted to mix up my la...

I still cannot believe this... - 20 replies

Yep, this is a good old fashioned lumber gloat. Sometimes, ya just get lucky. The two wide ones are nicely figured 5/4 tigerwood measuring 18.375” and 19.75” wide and each is about 10’ long. The 3 lighter boards on the right are 5/4 ash. The far left is mahogany and the second to left is as yet unidentified but has s...

How to start charging for cutting boards? - 21 replies

I’ve made some boards for friends & family and now other people are approaching me for them. So how do I shift gears and begin charging for my work? I’ll need to standardize how I do things a bit more from a size standpoint. Also, WHAT do I charge and how to calculate it? $0.50 per sq inch?

Cherry & Mahogany Cabinet - 9 replies

I’m making a sliding shelving cabinet for a bathroom and the client selected mahogany shelves and cherry with maple accents for the side. I want to stain this so that the cherry & mahogany both even put to roughly the same color, but I’m learning there are often issues with blotchy finishes on cherry. Seems there are 2 scho...

Lord Forgive Me, I Rushed it - 17 replies

Made a cuttingboard from some edge grain maple, added walnut stripes and glued up before realizing the table saw I was using trailed off at the end of each board, leaving some significant gaps in a few places as wide as 3/32”. Any chance I could get away with using West Systems 205/207 epoxy to fill these bacteria grabbing eyesores?

Sanded some cherry color change - 11 replies

Had to down a cherry & maple panel a little further than I had intended and managed to scrub all the nice deep color right out of the cherry. Short of staining it, what are my options to get that color back before I seal it with oil? Do I just put it in the sun and hope for the best?

Delta HomeCraft Bandsaw - 4 replies

What’s a decent price on one of these saws? Looking at one in un-restored condition, no motor, no drive belt. I’m hoping to snag it cheap since I will have to put some work into getting it going again. It’s the perfect size for my small shop and would allow me the option of doing a few projects where a bookmatch top is called f...

Free Scrollsaw - 21 replies

Neighbor was cleaning out her Mom’s place to prepare for a pending sale and asked if I’d have any interest in a “noisy old saw”. Asked her what she wanted get for it and she said there are a couple lawnmowers in her garage that need a little love. Told her that would be just fine by me, though I warned her I’m no me...

Workspace Challenge: 10x15 - 23 replies

Smaller than a 1 car garage @ 15’ long x 10’ wide with a 6’6” ceiling, but it’s the only space available for me to use as a shop, so I’ll need to cram everything I can (safely) shove in there. Currently existing setup consists of a RAS station 90” wide on wheels with wings for infeed / outfeed that fo...

Wenge - toxicity - 9 replies

I’ve been making cuttingboards for awhile and recently had some wenge fall into my lap. I’ve heard all sorts of opinions on wenge ranging from “it’ll kill you for looking at it sideways” to “quit being such a nancy and have at it!”. What say the LJ’s, is this stuff really as toxic as I’ve ...
