I'm a mid-thirties guy with a stressful job that doesn't allow much room for creativity. Getting out into the workshop and making a little sawdust is the best way I've found to manage that stress and keep it from spilling over into my personal life.

My house has a detached brick building that was built 102 years ago to serve as a small boathouse (my house is on a tributary of the Delaware River). Since moving into the house 7 years ago, I've been steadily transforming the old boathouse into my workshop. The next project for the workshop will be building a rack to store wood that will keep it from warping (or at least allow it to warp less than being leaned against the wall.

I have a lot to learn with respect to the craft of woodworking. Thus far, my projects have been either to perform a specific function (hold my wife's jewelry, hold a pair of binoculars by a window facing the water, store my wife's numerous cookbooks, etc.) or to give to my young nephew (xylophone, monkey rocking chair, etc.) Though I've got a long way to go, each project is better than the one before. The projects posted by others on lumberjacks certainly serve to inspire my efforts to improve and build upon my skills.

Happy woodworking!

Here’s an awning I made to go over our back door after the old aluminum one was crushed under the weight of snow last year. I used SketchUp to design it after I wasn’t able to find a picture of exactly what I wanted.
