Routing deep Mortises - 3 replies

Hi Guys, Still pretty new to power tool woodworking and am trying my hand at routing mortises. I have a 2 1/2” long 1/2” router bit and need to create 2” deep x 3” long x 7/8” wide mortises. Obviously I need multiple passes but was wondering if there is a difference between depth and width? By that I mean, i...

Joints for workbench legs - 4 replies

Hi guys ( and Gals, of course), I am building my workbench and am beginning my base build using 4×4 DF. My design has a modified H frame at either end with a trestle base and full width bearer on the top ( see blog for pics/plans). Originally I was going with MT the legs into the bearer and trestle but as I was laying out I suddenly t...

Which Stationary Machine First? - 20 replies

Hi Guys, I am still building my shop (and my skills) and, while I would love to be a hand tool purist, I don’t think I will live long enough to become one. So I need to buy some power tools. I have a reasonable TS and a couple of routers, along with the usual smattering of circular saws and a compound miter saw. I would like to get...

Useful Software-Check this out - 0 replies

Not really woodwork related so I will stuff it in here. I have read a number of threads where people have indicated they might lose the thread later, or not be able to find it etc. Despite the fact there are favorites/bookmarks etc., this can happen with useful website posts, other blogs etc. This can easily happen if you frequent numerous bl...

New sheet goods supplier at Lowes - 4 replies

Whenever I am at Lowes I always scout out the lumber department and see what they have on offer. Today, I noticed a much better than normal supply of 3/4 Birch plywood. It’s no Baltic Birch but for shop cabinets it looks great. Flat and well finished with one “show” side and a reverse that looks pretty good with clean joins at ...

Dust Extractor from Whole House Vac? - 4 replies

Hi Guys, I am in the process of building my shop in my basement. In one corner of my (soon-to-be) shop is a Beam whole house vacuum that we no longer use (but it works just fine). I was wondering if, with the right plumbing and a good separator, it could be re-purposed as the basis for my dust extractor unit. Anyone used one of these or ...

Question for DMT users - 8 replies

Hi Guys, I scored a couple of hand planes (my first) off Ebay and started fettling them after watching about a thousand videos and reading almost every post on here about it. When I got to the iron I realized that my 2” Spydercos, which work great on my chisels, were way to small to do a full size plane iron. So I bit the bullet and...

Cool hidden bed design - 2 replies

This is an interesting design project. Couple of hours in sketchup to figure out the hinges and fulcrums. Hmmm. Food for thought I guess.

Plane Info - 1 reply

Apologies if it has been mentioned before but I found this page with some good info on hand planes for beginners. I found it very informative (if a little dated).

Scrub Plane - did I screw up? - 19 replies

Well I bid on a brand new LN 40 1/2 scrub plane on EBay and won it. It was a good price and I’m not complaining but, truth be told I only bid because it was a LN and now, having looked at a few videos about it, I am not sure I will use it that much. I have a nice smoother and jointer plane and am in the bidding for a Junior Jack so I thi...

Add target to URL links - 8 replies

Could the Admins consider adding targets to the URL links posted by the LJ’s? If I’m on a computer I always right click and open In a new window but if I am on my iPad I can’t do that. It’s really frustrating when one is half way through a great thread and want to check out a link and it takes you off the site. Thanks.

Old style ridgid 6" jointer I passed, would you? - 16 replies

Hi guys, everyone wants corroboration when they make a questionable decision, right? I went to view an older Ridgid 6” jointer last night, one of the ones before they went Orange. By my reckoning that puts it pre 2003 at least. The guy wanted $250 but I told him on the phone the max I would consider would be $200 if it met my criteria. ...
