Need Starret System decoded - 4 replies

More decades ago than I’d like to admit to I bought a set of rules – 150, 300, 600 MM – from Bridge City Tool Works. They had English on one side in 32nd & 64th and metric in 1 & 1/2 mm on the other. Since I work in metric but often need to translate to designs & tools scaled in english, I loved them. My 300 mm...

Helical or HSS?? - 22 replies

I recently posted a question about moving a 500 lb planer jointer from the palet to the mobile unit and got good advice, so here’s my next question. I am looking at the 12” jointer/planer combo machines and wonder about the worth of the helical heads. In this size the upgrade runs $1,000. Is it worth it, in an amateur shop? I can...

Jet 12' jointer/planer unboxing & setup - 17 replies

I am thinking about buying the Jet 12” combo machine and have read the review & responses from 2014, but they do not address my concern. Jet list the weight at 500 lbs and ships it in one box fully assembled except for the fence & dust port. So how do I get a mobility base onto this machine so I can move it into place in my shop?...

Fret Saw vs Coping Saw - 7 replies

I’m confused. I own a coping saw, it’s OK. I have watched Rob Cosman wax enthusiastic about fret saws. When I look at fret saws they look a lot like coping saws. Looking at the Highland website I see they list coping saw blades but not fret saw blades. The Olsen web site doesn’t even distinguish between them, they just lis...

Sketchup vs Sketchlist - 18 replies

I have spent a few hours trying to learn Sketchup and am very frustrated. The online tutorial is so poorly put together that I cannot follow it. Does anyone know of good instructional material for this program? I see Sketchlist for sale but their website isn’t very informative, other than to say it is optimized for woodworking. Has any...

BT&C Store Saw - 5 replies

I didn’t want to sidetrack the 2017 Hand Saw discussion but my question is closely related. I am trying to sell my radial arm saw (3 1/2 HP DeWalt) and replace it with a hand saw. Has anyone used this saw:https://www.toolsforworkingwood.com/store/item/BT-HSAW.XX/BT&C__Hardware_Store_Saw#reviewsI would mostly be cross cutting hardwoo...

Fixing table saw binding and kickback - 12 replies

I searched through and found a number of older threads but none that addressed my concern directly. Three days ago, while trying to rip a bunch of 3/4 x /3/4 pieces of cherry from wider stock I experienced some binding on the back side of the saw, assumed that my push stick must be twisting the wood, and concentrated on pushing straight. The ...

Squaring Irons w/out a grinder - 12 replies

I have a smoothing plane iron, 1 7/8” that was sharp but about 1 mm out of square. I have been trying to square it on a Washita stone with the Veritas jig. After more than an hour I have reduced the error to maybe .5 mm. I don’t own a grinder so that is not an option. Am I doing something wrong? What other options do I have? ...
