Iron Wood - 2 replies

I had heard of Iron Wood before but never had the opportunity to turn it. Wow, is it hard! Lots of sharpening going on, finally had to resort to carbide. But, I’m beginning to like the outcome. Finishes very nicely. If you would like to see the transition, the video is here:

Leaving The History IN! - 1 reply I was going to just turn this round. As I got into it, leaving it rectangle with the chainsaw cuts, bandsaw cut and natural edge seemed the way to go. A viewer commented that he liked seeing the “history” of the piece. I thought that was a great term! What do you think?Phil

My First Goblet - 4 replies

I’m a bowl turner and not good at spindle turning, but I keep trying. This is not the tallest or skinniest or anything else record setting. Just a goblet and I guess since I’m still learning to spindle turn I thought it turned out pretty good.

Spalted Maple Bowl - 1 reply friend of my channel contacted me saying she had some wood for me. She wasn’t kidding! How kind of her to drive three hours to my shop with a truckload of turning wood. Best Piece Of "Junk Wood" Yet - 3 replies

I don’t know what else to call it. This tree grows on this property like a weed and falls over on a regular basis. I’ve turned other pieces out of it with mixed results. It’s got all the bug holes you would ever want and is usually pretty soft and fragile. This piece is the best of three I’ve done and the colors, ...

Is This a Hollow Form? - Video - 7 replies

I don’t know the definition of a hollow form but it seems like if the opening is smaller than the inside diameter, it’s a hollow form. In any event, fun to turn, very difficult to sand! Here is the video:
