This was a bookcase that was to support heavy loads without sagging. The front of the shelves was trimmed with a piece of 1×2 that acts both as a decoration and a stiffener.

The back shelf support is hidden. Each shelf has a tongue milled into the back edge. The back (1/4” ply) is made in consecutive pieces so the back looks like one piece but is really three. The tongue and the separate pieces form a stressed web structure to support the back side.
