My love for woodworking started at a very young age. Until that pesky Grade one came along at school, I would visit my grandfather at his shop on a daily basis. His tools consisted of mostly hand tools and a few power tools. Just a table saw and a radial arm saw that collected more dust than they made. Oh ya, he finally bought an electric drill after a few more years. While I appreciate having the power tools myself these days I also have never lost sight of the wonderful experience of the hand planes, saws, drills etc. and the associated workouts. Recently I have reestablished this fondness for hand tools, partly due perhaps to my wanting to "go back" and also because table saws and jointers are not very popular when our grandson is over and its his nap time. Actually I sneak a few naps myself from time to time. I rather like em. I have an interest in general woodworking and have made mostly various pieces of furniture for the house. I like the calming effect of turning as well. A few years ago I picked up carving which I've grown quite fond of. The nice thing about this type of "woodworking" is that it can be done almost anywhere. I believe its the only form of woodworking that can be done in the house while also watching the game, and not get the usual flack that one might expect after 33 years marriage. Nothing that I enter into competition, just carve for myself if you know what I mean. I'm looking forward in the hope that my grandson will be bitten like I was. I hope that he can appreciate a Lie Nielson plane when he gets it one day.
