Lately, I have been receiving questions about what type of microphones I use when I make my videos. It got me thinking about the sound quality and how I can improve it on the cheap. I picked up the Takstar SGC-598 shotgun microphone for $30.00 online and I wanted to show the difference between a built in camera microphone, an external shotgun mic, and a headset mic can make. While you might not think this is directly related to woodworking, a lot of people are now filming their projects and their builds. Let me know if you think this video can go in the product review section of LJ and I’ll go ahead and re-post it there too. I hope this video helps.

10dB boost seems to increase background noise. Better with it off. I am using cheap ear buds, so YMMV. Thanks for the review and congrats on the new mic!

Hi Jim,

Yeah the 10 dB boost was insane. It does show the effects of Phantom Power. After some post production and having the boost off, the audio is a lot better than the built in mic.

I also have a cheap set of Skull Candy ear buds and they totally work better than some of the $100+ headphones I’ve tried before.

Thanks for watching,

Yep, better without the 10db boost.
