Help With Table Top Bowing - 12 replies

I’m looking for thoughts/ideas on why this table is bowing. My instinct and experience tell me it’s a wood movement issue but I am not certain. The bowing seems most prominent at both ends so I believe it is linked to the legs. I routed to a depth of ¼ inch and to the exact dimensions of the top horizontal leg member to inset the legs (snug f...

Identifying Genuine Ceylon (East Indian) Satinwood - 14 replies

I’m wondering if anyone has expertise or experience regarding Ceylon (East Indian) satinwood. I am seeking to make a period correct replica of an item and it calls for satinwood. My research has taught me that several species of wood are sold as satinwood but are not the genuine article. Yellowheart, movingui and pyinma are some example...

Rockler Slo-Mo Video - Definitely for Lumber"jocks" - 12 replies

This is a cool video Rockler put out just in time for the Superbowl. As a passionate woodworker, viewing it gave me goose bumps. If any of you were athletes or perhaps a musician, artist, etc., it is like seeing an exciting moment in a game, a critical measure in a piece of music, a daring brush stroke, or what have you. In short, as woodwork...

Stock Maximums (and minimums) on Jointer - 21 replies

I submitted a question to the Q and A section of Woodworker’s Journal magazine and they opted to answer it in their “e-zine”. For those that don’t choose to open the link, my question essentially was: “What is protocol on maximum lengths of stock to SAFELY push through one’s jointer. To their credit, they op...

First Raised Panel Doors - 36 replies

Hi folks. I am quite excited. Despite 31 years of woodworking experience, I made my first raised panel doors (two) today. I have made paneled doors but not raised panels. I made the rails and stiles and glued up the panels during the day, then, I raised the panels tonight. Nothing is glued or sanded yet but I thought I would post this anywa...

I bought this TS from Woodcraft one year ago next month and it is an awesome TS. So why am I seeking to sell it? I have had a change of heart and want to go to a SawStop. The price to buy this through Woodcraft today is the same as one year ago, $3099. There is also a $200 excess weight fee so the total this would cost you is $3300. I will ...

Tenoning Jig for Powermatic Table Saw - 9 replies

I own a PM2000 and want to purchase a tenoning jig for it. I know I could make one (I have seen several on LJ that are quite nice.) but I decided I want to buy one. That being said, the reviews I have read are not all that impressive and posts/comments here on LJ are similar. From Delta, to Grizzly, to Rockler and Woodcraft there seems to be ...

Has Anyone Heard From Don K.? - 12 replies

I’m a bit concerned about a fellow LJ from whom I haven’t heard or seen a post from in over 200 days. Don K. was quite active with his postings awhile back. He is the one who started the post, “Where are We All From” that is still getting hits. I enjoyed his posts. He did some nice reviews of several tools he bought a...

Plywood for Pine Projects - 27 replies

I have been woodworking for 30 years now so I am a bit embarassed to ask this question but here goes. Assuming we don’t want contrasting woods, if we make something out of red oak and plywood is called for, we use red oak plywood. If we are working with cherry and need plywood, we get cherry plywood, etc. What plywood do you use when ma...

Let There Be Light? - 12 replies

Happily, I am expanding my workshop. It will go from the current 8 feet wide by 18 feet long to 21 feet wide and 18 feet long. It will be 378 square feet, a gain of 264 square feet and more than adequate for a workshop. (So he says now!). I am seriously considering spending whatever extra expense it costs to have two skylights (windows) plac...
