My Article in Fine Woodworking Magazine (and website)
I wrote a "letter to the editor" of Fine Woodworking magazine expressing the journey I experienced after building the Jefferson Lap Desk that appeared in their magazine. After several follow-ups and some discussion, they decided to run the letter as a submitted article. An editor worked with me and as might be expected, made a number of cuts and changes to my submission. Still, it's a badge of honor to have an article (with photos) published in Fine Woodworking magazine. Below is a link to the online version of the article, released today to capture the July 4th holiday. When the FW home page opens, click on the words, "From the Bench, Making History" for the full article. A more abbreviated version will appear in the next issue of the magazine towards the end of July.
Wonderful Article Lenny!
Congratulations on it, to be asked to contribute to FW is quite an honor indeed!
And that is still one heck of a nice re-creation that NBSS gets!
Well Done all around my Friend!
Congratulations Lenny! What an accomplishment. I have said many times you are a true craftsman. If I ever get back out your way, I will have to bring my copy of Fine Woodworking and get it signed.
Your friend in Colorado

Congratulations Lenny, quite an achievement on your part. Being published like this is a very nice acknowledge of your skills. I hope they send you a framed copy of the article to display in your shop, or at least a copy you can frame.
Have a great 4th Holiday.
Great work and really effective community outreach! I hope the school kids (someday) appreciate how special it was for you to make history come alive in this way.
I appreciate your comments leftcoaster. Thank you. I really wanted my home state to have the desk so a wider audience could view and learn about it. However, the thought of it being locked up in a vault "when not on display" did not sit well with me.
I saw the article and actually left a comment there, but since you also hang-out here, this might be a better place to connect. First off, excellent job! A few weeks ago my grandson and I started building the same desk and have been struggling to find matching hinges. The only ones we've found so far are the correct size and hole pattern, but the corners are cut off. Where did you source yours, if you don't mind me asking? Our desk will also be made from solid mahogany, though I doubt we will attempt the period-correct dovetails, as you did. He's only 10 and I really want him to do as much of the build as he can. On an interesting side note, we were given some old, finished shelves that were supposed to be walnut, but after planing through the dark finish we discovered that they were mahogany, just like Mr. Jefferson's desk. Thanks in advance and congratulations again on the neat article. Scott
Thank you Scott. I will send a private message to you.
