After establishing the reference face and edge, I use my marking gauge to mark the board thickness using the reference face as the guide. Once I have marked all four sides, I use my jack plane, jointer plane and smoothing plane to bring down the rough surface of the board to my marking lines. Then, I repeat the step for the board width using the reference edge as the guide. Once finished the board was perfectly square. (as perfect as necessary at least).
