LN 212 scraper plane - 2 replies

I needed a scraper today for some tangled grain in Hard Maple. My hand scrapers needed work and I remembered my little LN 212 scraper, so I used it. Worked great. I had almost forgotten I had it.

Dovetail glue-up - 9 replies

I’m making a nice toy box/blanket chest for my favorite niece. All corners of the box will be dovetailed. I’m using the PC 4212 Dovetail jig template as you would a Keller type dovetail jig. It works great and cuts the tightest fitting perfect dovetails I’ve ever produced – by hand or by jig. But…they are milled so ...

Dark stain on hard Maple - II - 8 replies

Things are looking very good now. The Charles Neil pre-color conditioner, applied as directed, works great. Blotch is well under control now, thank goodness. As to color, I ordered some Transtint Coffee Brown, which was said to be good on Maple. And yes, it is. But now that the blotch is under control, a lot of my mixed dyes look good. Hard to p...

Dark stain on Hard Maple - 10 replies

I’ve got plenty of scraps to work with, and I’ll get started on Monday, but I’ll see what you folks say about it. The favorite niece wants the toy box to be a dark color, and wants it to be more of a walnut than cherry. No problem, since I have plenty of already mixed dark stains, but have no personal history with hard maple. I...

Porter Cable 4212 dovetail jig - 7 replies

I’ve had one for 5 years or more. It works pretty good, though I have to ‘relearn’ it when I go to use it again. The biggest problem I had with it is that maximum width of a board is 12 inches. I was grumping about that while reading up on ways to dovetail (other than by hand) unlimited width boards. I found, to my surprise, th...

Veritas PM-V11 chisel sharpening - 8 replies

Just got two of the new Veritas powdered metal chisels. From what I had read, they came already super sharp. That was not the case at all, so I got out the sharpening gear. They sharpened very easily, and I liked that just fine. Tested the edges on some paper edges and MAN, they were sharp, and impressively so. I grabbed a Pfiel 8mm chisel that ...

Using Porter Cable 4212 dovetail jig - just the template on wide boards - 2 replies

I’ve had the Porter Cable dovetail jig for 5 or 6 years, and have used it on boards of 12 inches or less. Works great, but now I need to use it on boards of 16 to 18 inches wide (blanket chest). Per the Supplemental Manual, the template can be used, without the rest of the jig, on unlimited width boards. It doesn’t look that complica...

Finally ordered the Veritas chisels - 5 replies

I’ve been wanting to upgrade my everyday use bench chisels. I’ve considered this one and that one, and after much deliberation have ordered a couple of the Veritas PM-V11 chisels. I hated to spend that much money, but the wife just told me she’s replacing her perfectly good cell phone with the newest iPhone. Geez! So I ordered ...

Blanket chest/toy box - wood suggestions - 5 replies

I have a favorite niece, and have offered to build something for her newest child. She has decided on a nice blanket chest, which will begin life as a toy chest. She wants dovetail joinery and picked a box design off Pinterest. She want the box to be dark “like the Shaker Keeping Box I made for her wedding”. I made that out of walnut...

Bench chisel edge durability - 1 reply

Today I decided to sharpen all my chisels, or at least those that needed it. My fine work chisels are LN, and I’m quite fond of them. But for just general use at the workbench, I’ve had a set of the Marples/Irwin chisels – the Sheffield steel type. The Irwins don’t have that durable an edge. Not bad, but not great. I thin...
