Help!! Dent in finish - 8 replies

So I built this table maybe 5 years ago (you can see the entry in my projects if you like). Well I have a live edge board that everyone at my wedding signed, and we displayed it on the table. I had put some rubber feet on it to keep it from scratching the finish. Evidently, the board was too heavy for the small feet, and over the course of a few...

Benchcrafted Tail Vise Install - 2 replies

Does anyone have experience with the install of a Benchcrafted Tail Vise? I could use some tips before I start building the bench. Mainly the question I had is with bolting on the end cap on. Has anyone done it another way? I was thinking of draw-boring it on.

Sawmill/Double slab workbench top - 6 replies

My dad and I recently got a sawmill, and ever since, I’ve been on the lookout for some good logs to get a workbench top. We found a good-looking red oak at a local tree service place, about 17” in diameter and 8’ long. With this log, I think we could cut two slabs at 4×12 to join together for a top, and still cut out the pith. Does anyone h...

Milk paint issues - 3 replies

If anyone has any experience with milk paint , I could use some help. I built an anarchists tool chest and wanted to paint it red over white. Well the red did not turn out the way I would have liked, but I got impatient and just wanted it to be done, so I rubbed on some BLO and then a few coats of paste wax. Well after a week or so of looking at...

Treated redwood - 4 replies

My dad gave me this redwood 4×6 that he “acquired” when he worked at one of the power plants in town. He was using it as a stop for a washout, so the dirt in his yard didn’t wash out when it rained. Like the lumber hoarder I am, I took it, even though I have no room for it. Recently, I decided to do my first project with o...

Hand plane questions - 18 replies

I’m fairly new to hand planes, so I’ve been trying to take in as much information as I can on planes and how to use them. And my first planes I bought were the revamped Stanley sweetheart smoother and low angle jack plane. At first I liked them, but the more I use them, and the more I use other brands, the less I like them. I’ve...

Green cedar - 4 replies

I was planning on building a saw bench tomorrow since I’ve got the day off, so I ran up to Home Depot and looked for some material for it. All I saw were framing studs, but the did have some western red cedar 2×4’s that were green. I bought some of those thinking that it would probably be ok, since it’s not a project that&...

Texas Weather - 12 replies

Hey guys, in case you’re not familiar with it, there’s a saying about Texas weather: “if you don’t like it, wait a bit and it’ll change.” That may not be the case in summer. It’s hot as hell every damn day. But the past few weeks, it’s been really moody. Monday, it got to right around the freezing...

Bench update/progress pics/finish questions - 6 replies

I posted my bench last week with some questions I had. Just wanted to post a few pics of my assembly, and ask what in y’all’s experience is is a good finish for a bench top. And to see if y’all have any suggestions for how I could improve the design on this one, or if I should ever build another bench in the future. This is my ...

My first ( and hopefully last) work bench - 15 replies

Hey fellas. I’m new to this site and wood working in general, but I figured this would be the place to get a little feedback and constructive criticism. I’ve been doing cabinets at a local shop for a few years, and developed a love of woodworking. Over the last few years, I’ve taken a shine to using hand tools, but my every att...
