Part 1: Preparing the rings

I tried a new design element on the wedgie sled. I made “complementary” angles out of maple. This gives an unique look with the maple pieces having wide and narrow ends alternating as shown. I only did this for the first 3 rings. The remainder just have 1/4” thick maple pieces. I added black veneer for added contrast.

Part 2: Started turning

Started turning the vase (or bowl) today. This was an experiment using complementary segments in the rings. The effect did not turn out very dramatic. I like the rich color of the paduak.

Part 3: Finished Turning

Haven’t worked on this project for over a week. Finished turning and now I need to seal the woodbefore I sand. The paduak sanding dust will “bleed” onto the maple if not sealed properly.

Part 4: Finally finished

I applied several coasts of clear shellac and then wet sanded and applied automotive polish and auto wax. It was very difficult to keep the paduak saw dust from bleeding onto the maple even after sealing the maple.
