air compressor recommendation - 11 replies

My crummy little tankless 2HP Sears compressor (919.152340) just gave up after many years of decent service. Motor stopped dead in the middle of inflating bike tires. I want to get a portable tank compressor for light to moderate duty: stapling, brad nailing, dust blow-off, tire inflating, and so forth. It will not be used on a daily basis, j...

Delta 36-725 "Easter Egg" - 3 replies

The “Warning” label on the fence on my new 36-725 caught my eye today. At first glance, it appears to be in English, French, and Spanish. (Warning, Avertissement, Advertencia) But for some reason, I looked a bit closer, and noticed that the French and Spanish warnings had been “greeked out.” Designers put phony La...

Quartersawn legs & wood movement - 2 replies

For legs built using the mitered-face over solid core method, is there any danger of cross-grain expansion causing a problem? Here are some pictures of the method: (credit due to lucky9cat’s Morris chair build at http://www.ukworkshop.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23301)

What kind of wood is this? - 2 replies

I bought a used wooden playset for the lumber, thinking it was redwood. Woops. When I cut into it, it became clear that it’s not. The seller swears that it’s a Rainbow playset, and their website says they use redwood, cedar, douglas fir, and something from China called cunninghamia. It’s quite aromatic, but smells sweeter a...

Fein Turbo II Questions - 3 replies

I just sprung for a Fein Turbo II Wet/Dry vac. (They’re on sale for under $300 at a number of places, though not at Rockler. That’s cheaper than my other choice, the Porter-Cable 7812.) It’s nicely built, feels like quality, and is very quiet. My questions are these: 1. It came with a short rubber tube identified as a &...

Finish for Redwood Picnic Table - 2 replies

What’s a good finish for a redwood picnic table? I’ve used spar varnish on other redwood pieces, but for this I’m looking for something that brings out the beauty and color of the wood, without the slick urethane look. Of course, it must be appropriate for a “food surface.”

How to repair gouged MDF? - 17 replies

So I just finished building Wood Magazine’s tilt-top workbench (like this: http://lumberjocks.com/projects/57008), and was trimming up the maple band around the edge with a router. The router grabbed onto the edge, and did a little dance on the MDF top, making about a 1/2 inch deep by 3 inch long gouge :(. What’s the best way to fi...

Dremel bits in Rotozip? - 2 replies

Do Dremel router bits work effectively/safely in a Rotozip? Home depot has a pretty comprehensive set of Dremel bits for $19.99.

How to tighten DP chuck w/o key? - 4 replies

I inherited an old drill press with a Ridgid chuck and no key. The chuck is no longer manufactured, and I’ve tried a “universal” key as well as a Jacobs key with the same size pilot (1/4”): no cigar. What’s the best way to tighten the chuck without damaging it? I could do it with big pliers, but that will make na...

Help finding chuck key - 2 replies

I’ve got an old drill press (Sprunger DP14) with no chuck key. The chuck is labeled “Ridgid Supreme Professional 1500” and separately “O-1/2” and “33 Taper”. Anyone have any idea where to find a chuck key? Ridgidparts.com was a dead end, as was Ridgid tech support. Thanks in advance!
