Dust Collection upgrade

Took my 2hp Grizzly dust collector off the stand and mounted it on the wall. Freed up floor space around my machines. Replaced the the filter bags with a canister style pleated filter on top, and a clear plastic collection bag on the bottom. The biggest improvement came with the addition of a Super Dust Deputy Cyclone from Oneida. The Cyclone comes with a 5” inlet so I was able to run 5” pipe all the way to my manifold where my machines are each connected via 4” ports. This machine moves a lot of air, and the cyclone setup keeps most of the chips and dust in the drum below. Very little ever makes it to the bag/filter. Much easier to empty also. This was an extremely cost effective solution to an ailing system. For anyone who has a DC that isn’t cutting the mustard, I encourage you to consider a similar modification before you go and spend $1K or more on an new system. Total cost was around $350 for the cyclone, the canister filter, and the ductwork that I needed to add.

Looks great! Can you share where you got the canister filter?

I’m curious to see or hear about the rest of your set up – ducts, etc. I’m working on a blog to go through all of the calculations and rules of thumb and multitude of on line resources plus actual changes to DC set ups that resulted in real world improvements. Any reason why you didn’t go up to 6” duct?

A lot can be explained by reading a “project” post I made a few years ago by the same name. You can see that here:

And here is a photo of the original manifold I mention in this blog and the project post:
