Hi there all woodwork enthusiasts. Born and bred on the “ vlaktes” of the Orange Free State province in South Africa, the year was 1956. The boy, future woodwork aficionado, Jan van der Westhuizen. Growing up on the farm Krompan, I had a definite appreciation and love for nature, in particular the natural home grown trees such as willow rhus, buffalo-thorn, wild olive etc. Yet, along with the indigenous flora, there is the problem of peregrine trees for instance the mesquite and its subspecies. The mesquite tree can be utilised for various woodworking and other tasks such as charcoal making. I would like to eradicate it from my farm and restore the natural balance of the eco-system.

I knew then as much as now that I would mould and shape nature to strive and possibly achieve perfection and the means should be woodworking.
