I have been a serious hobbyist woodworker for a little more than a year. Over the course of my life I have had a lot of exposure through helping my Dad with projects, and learning a good bit of woodworking from him while I was growing up. I've always done small projects here and there and also the diy things that every homeowner does and learns to do. But, I would say that maybe a year ago or so is when I seriously stayed devoting time to advance my skills.
Recently I started, and ended, an apprenticeship that I thought was what I wanted. Commercial Carpentry. This is and was the closest to a woodworking apprenticeship in my area. I decided that I really wanted to pursue a career in woodworking and thought that would provide a nice transition or at least leaf me to opportunities to do so.
Bottom line, I enjoyed the work. I liked moving from site to site, project to project. The hours were fine. And the pay was Awesome. But, I needed to go to bed early 8-9 at night. Wake up at 330-4am. Be at work at 6. Get home around 4pm. And be tired/exhausted. Spend a few hours with my wife, and go back to bed. I had little to no free time, let alone time to enjoy my hobbies.
I finished one job and went on the out of work list, and then started thinking. So many people can make it either as a woodworker alone or by posting on YouTube and sharing projects, shop ideas, tips, etc. If they can do it, what do I need to learn so that I can do it too?
I made it through Marine Corps Boot Camp, I've survived hell overseas, I made it through my personal battles, I've somehow managed to marry my awesome wife and have this great life, ...... I can do this!
