Anyone know what these are called? - 5 replies

They look kind of like T-nuts but the spikes appear to sink into the sides of the hole rather than straight down. If anyone knows the name it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all.

Needed: Ancient Kauri pen blanks - 11 replies

Hey all – I’m looking for three ancient kauri pen blanks. Co-worker is a kiwi ex-pat and would like some pens turned. My go to source here in Canada penblanks.ca doesn’t have any currently listed and any American sites I’ve found either won’t ship to Canada or are charging huge fees to do so. Anyone have a lead on a Canadian source or some...

FWW had an apology for an “inconsiderate” meme in their Instagram story today. Did anyone see what it was? I hadn’t noticed anything.

Kumiko wood choice - 4 replies

I’m starting my first kumiko panel tomorrow. Matt Kennedy recommends basswood and I’ve heard other suggest pine. I’ve found a good deal on some balsa. Can anyone think of any concerns with balsa. Never really worked with it outside of a few model planes. I figure sharp chisels should deal with any problems. Anything I’m not considering?

Veneer from plane shavings - 6 replies

Was just playing around in the shop today and made my first few experiments with veneer. I only had one type of commercial veneer (walnut) and wanted another to contrast with it. I grabbed my LAJ and planes a thick shaving equal to the thickness of the veneer from a piece of scrap QSWO. I uncurled the shaving in very hot water and then let it dr...

V sized pen mill pilot shaft - 7 replies

I have a bunch of pen kits that use a ‘V’ sized drill bit for the brass tubes. I’m looking for the corresponding pen mill. Lee Valley used to carry them but seem to have discontinued them. Anywhere know where in Canada one might get these. Woodcraft and amazon.com have them in the states but shipping is prohibitive from woodcra...

Laser Engraver - 83 replies

Hey all – I have a decent side gig turning pens. A question I get asked a lot is if I can engrave them. I’m not set up so I take them to a shop to do it for me. Prices are pretty standard in my city ($30-35 for set up and $7.50 for each subsequent item). Because most of pens are one offs people are looking at the $30 on top of what I...

Hey all – We have threads for all sorts of things here but lately I’ve noticed some really nice boxes being built and thought that we needed a box specific thread. toolsfromjapan - 2 replies

Has anyone heard from Stuart at toolsfromjapan recently. I asked a question about shipping two weeks ago and haven’t heard anything back. I know there were some family issues recently but I thought I’d heard that he was back at it now. Any other Canadians order from him? Were you able to get a different shipping method than what t...

Removing paste wax from oak pores - 10 replies

I just finished a box and I guess I still had a few open pores in the oak. My application of paste wax left some unsightly light coloured specks over the fumed finish. Any tips for getting rid of those?

Fuming question - 6 replies

Finishing a small box made from 100 year old reclaimed qs white oak and would like to fume it with ammonia. I had trouble sourcing the 25%+ solutions so ended up getting the weaker (5-10%) solution from the grocery store. After 24 hours my sample piece was already super dark. The finishing book I was referencing stated I needed three days with t...

Rough patch in CA glue 8 hours later - 3 replies

I finished a stabilized maple burl pen this morning with my usual CA glue finish. Turned out really nice. Came back and looked at the pen this evening and there is a rough patch on the barrel. It wasn’t there earlier. Any ideas on how this might of happened? Repairs that don’t involve stripping it down and refinishing it? Thanks all.

Milk Paint over Danish Oil - 14 replies

Hi all – I tried adding a stripe of milk paint (1/16” wide) on a box. The box is finished with three coats of Watco Danish Oil (walnut). I pulled the masking tape off and almost all the paint came off with it. I had made test pieces where it worked fine. I think my paint was a bit thicker on the box then on the test piece, but not si...

Removing Dowels - 20 replies

My wife wanted an old barn door to hang in our pantry in our kitchen. She found one but it was 30” wide rather than the required 24”. I was required to make it work. I’ve dismantled the door and found that it was held together with 5/8”s dowels with no glue. They are just long and tight and have held the thing together fo...

New Mitre Box from LV - 6 replies

Anyone seen this yet? http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=76038&cat=51&ap=1 Looks like a pretty slick set up compared to the plastic pieces of junk one can get. Might have to put it on the Christmas list this year.
