Furniture Design - Where do I learn and get Quality Critiques? - 22 replies

I’ve been messing with building stuff since I was a kid. If there is one thing i would be if I had the choice it would be a furniture maker (Don’t look at my projects here, I’ve been getting better). That said, I’ve read what everyone says about careers in woodworking. To summarize, it’s a romanticized vision and...

Spiraled Elm - Is it even remotely stable? - 4 replies

So my father-in-law pulled aside a large elm log from a job site and asked if I wanted to mill it up. It wasn’t necessarily the most beautiful log, and I could see a fairly severe twist/spiral from some of the exposed wood, but I thought it would be an interesting experiment. I went about making some slabs. Immediately I started havin...

Diagnosis my tablesaw motor pop - 23 replies

I’ve been putting more time in on my tablesaw lately, and today when cutting through a piece of thick maple the saw made a dull pop sound, stuttered a bit, and then I could smell electrical fault. I quickly turned it off, unplugged, and got the fire extinguisher at the ready. After opening the cabinet, everything looks normal, except t...

Does my hybrid table saw need a motor cover? - 5 replies

So I have a hybrid table saw. The typical “bubble-style” motor cover fell off. What I noticed in trying to fix it is that the motor is completely enclosed in the cabinet. So my question; do I need the “bubble-style” cover or can I just put a piece of plywood over the hole? The only thing I can see the cover actual...

Help Drying Blackjack Crotch - 2 replies

I posted this http://lumberjocks.com/topics/151242 a few weeks ago. Since then I milled up the logs. They had some amazing mineral stiping. There was also a very nice crotch which I took two thick slabs from. See pics. After they dry I want to use them for bench tops. They are each 2” thick, and I don’t know how to dry th...

is there a guideline or rule-of-thumb for fret saw blade tension? I fell like I’m getting it about as tight as I dare, but the blade still flexes quite a bit. I’m not pushing hard or anything.

advise needed - 4 replies

In my haste to start checking off my honey-do list I decided to tackle the counter top above the washer and dryer that my wife has been asking for. I glued up some tongue and groove oak flooring to make a large (32×72) top. After gluing, it still had a fair amount of flex because of the taper on each board. Wanting to make this “...

A true story, by Jeff - 3 replies

Jeff’s head tossed on his pillow. He was having a dream that he was in his parent’s back yard trying to do something with his girls, and had to put sticks in the ground. There was a convenient hole, so he put a stick in it. A very loud wasp came out of the hole and started buzzing his head. He swatted at the wasp with his stick...
