Electrical Issues - 5 replies

Fellow Lumberjacks, I recently purchased a new Jet 1640evs lathe. It is a 1.5 hp motor wired for 110 and has a built in phase converter. The manual recommends a 15 amp circuit. I first tried using it on a gfi equipped outlet and it tripped the gfi. Next I tried using an outlet on a circuit without the gfi and it kept tripping the arc fault b...

Offering up a Grizzly 10% coupon - 1 reply

I received a 10% off Grizzly coupon, but unfortunately will be moving very soon and don’t need any more equipment before I move. So I am offering up this coupon to the first person that is interested.

Urgent - Need project engraved or layered in mid Michigan - 1 reply

Unfortunately I am building an urn for an uncle. Is there anyone here from central Michigan that could either engrave or laser some text on the top for me? I need the urn completed for Thursday, so I don’t have a lot of time. I’m located in Montcalm County, so I am looking for someone located with under an hour of drive time.

Box Construction - 4 replies

I’m planning on building a wooden tissue box. I was wondering how everyone is attaching the top to the box. With the smaller dimensions of a tissue box, is it safe to attach the top by glueing? I really want a bottom loading box (1 piece box), so I’m not interested in a removable top.

Talkin' CNC - 9 replies

Lately I have been contemplating getting a CNC machine. I am a hobbyist, so I’m not looking for an industrial machine. I’m thinking something that is probably atleast 24” x 24”, or just a little bigger. I don’t see myself needing a 4’x4’ or larger unit. One feature that has really caught my eye and i...

Sawstop is expanding its product line - 9 replies

I received an email from Sawstop today, it looks like they are expanding their product line a bit. Here is the link to the news on their website. The new dust collection guard and outfeed table seem the most interesting to me. Hope they will be competitively priced.

In need of some design assistance - 2 replies

My aunt found some library card drawers and wants me to build my sister a case for the card drawers. This is going to be a Christmas gift, so I need to stop putting it off and get busy. The reason that I have been putting it off, is I just don’t know how to properly construct it. I have 2 ideas for the construction. Option 1 would be...

Will I ever learn??? - 5 replies

While at work this morning, I got a call from a client. He says it’s totally off the wall, so I’m really wondering what it is. He tells me that since his wife purchased a cutting board that I had donated to the local Conservation District at their fundraising auction last fall, they were wondering if I had one or could make one for...

Does any one know if there is going to be a woodworking show in Detroit this year? I found little on the interweb other than it might be this weekend. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Heating a woodshop - 20 replies

Fellow LumberJocks, I will be building a new 30’x32’x10’ wood shop this fall. I want to heat it (I live in central Michigan so winters are somewhat long and cold), so that I can have a place to work in the winter. I am looking for any and all opinions on how you would heat the shop. I am leaning towards radiant floor heat, s...

Woodmaster 718 market value - 5 replies

I ran across an ad for this woodmaster 718. The seller is asking $2750 and apparently it has the sander and rip saw attachments, which i feel is way too much. I was wondering what your thoughts were on the going rate for these things? I know you can get a new one for $2999, add in another $700 for the pro pack. I am thinking 1500-2000 is ...

Belsaw Planer - 2 replies

There is a Belsaw planer for sale on Craigslist. I believe it is a model 984. They are asking $900, apparently very lightly used. It has the ripsaw attachment, comes with extra knives, unused tongue and groove cutter heads. Is this a reasonable deal? Is this a good model? Any reason to runaway from the thought of purchasing it?

Setting up new bandsaw - 8 replies

I just picked up my new Laguna 14/12 bandsaw, which is my first “real” band saw. I don’t consider my previous craigslist find Craftsman one a real band saw by any means. In setting it up with a 3/4” blade, i centered the gullets of the blade on the center of the upper wheel, per the Snodgrass video. However, on the low...

Deciding on a Band Saw - A beat to death topic - 6 replies

Well, I’ve gotten my tax return back and it is burning a hole in my pocket. I currently have a Craftsman 12” tilting head bandsaw, which is a small step-up from having nothing at all. I am wanting to upgrade to a much higher quality of saw. I’m looking at spending ~$1,000-$1,400 on it. I know there is the Rikon 10-325 which...

Found a good deal - 1 reply

Here is my tool gloat for the month. I found this deal at the local sears this weekend. They also had an open box one for $43.93, with only the one glass disk that was installed on it, and no abrasives or the second glass disk. Now if I can learn how to sharpen the blades, I will be all set.

What type of hinge? - 2 replies

I am building a reading nook for my mother. I’m building the carcass out of plywood, the top will be oak. She wants the top to open to allow for storage in the cabinet. I was wondering what type of hinge to use? I want part of the top to open, but not all of it. The top will also be used as a seat, so i want it to be sturdy. I was th...

My Craigslist Tool Gloat - 5 replies

After seeing many good tool gloats on here, I feel it is time to share one of mine. I just purchased a brand new Porter Cable 693lrpk router with both fixed and plunge base for $120. Looks like the going rate these days on Amazon is $209.

How many young lumberjocks are out there? - 20 replies

I was just wondering how many young (under 40) lumberjocks are out there? Since I’m asking, I should note that I’m 32.
