Jet Steel Frame Bandsaw 14" (14 SFX) - 2 replies

This Jet is a relatively new bandsaw on the market. Anyone here have one and care to comment on it? On paper and price point (approx. $1,000) looks like a great saw. Very tempting.

Jet 1221vs Lathe Stand - 8 replies

Those of you that have the Jet 1221vs midi lathe, do you also have the Jet stand that is made for it? If so, is it the older model with the black cast iron that sold for around $350.00, or is it the new model that sells for around $250.00? In any event, how do you compare either stand to a homemade stand as far as vibration may be concerned?

Spindle Runout ? - 6 replies

On the issue of measuring spindle runout (concentricity) of a wood lathe , I am a little perplexed. If I measure the runout on my friend’s lathe inside the morse taper and get less than .0001” (one ten thousandt), and then measure the flat part just past the threads and get .001”, and then measure the step up from that and g...

VFD ?? - 8 replies

I am looking to buy a lathe as indicated in another thread I started. My garage shop is only wired for 110. One of the lathes I am considering is the Jet 1640EVS. I would like to understand how a VFD system works, particularly as to amps drawn. The main reason for this is to determine factors on the use of an extesnion cord, and also curious to ...

Lathe Size - 20 replies

I keep thinking I need a bigger lathe like the size of a Jet 1642 or Nova Galaxy. But then when I give it further thought, I start to wonder whether a midi such as the Rikon 70-220vsr or the Jet 1221vs might not be a better choice for me. Right now, I can afford up to the price of the Nova Galaxy or Jet 1640 or Laguna Revo. Here are my though...

Revo 18/36 Lathe - 4 replies

I did a search on this forum, and it seems that there are a few Laguna Revo 18/36 lathe owners here. I am seriously considering one, or possibly a Jet 1640 evs. Input from the Revo 18/36 owners or Jet 1640 evs owners would be appreciated. Thanks.

Rikon 70-100 or Nova Comet II - 17 replies

Looking at mini (midi?) lathes again. If you have used a Rikon 70-100 or a Nova Comet II, please provide your opinion on what you think of either or both. If you could get either one for about the same price, which would you choose, and why? For those that have or had either lathe, how have they held up over the years?

Shopsmith 10er Dedicated Lathe - 5 replies

Recently acquired a Shopsmith 10er, and I have been using it exclusively as a lathe. It is well made in the good old USA back in the 1950’s of heavy cast iron. There is a speed changer on it that allows it to reduce to approx. as little as 425 rpm (per specs). On the low range pulley, the speed is variable approx. between 425 and 1600. Th...

Runout and Deflection - 13 replies

I tend to be overly susceptable to expecting perfection (almost) from my woodworking tool as though they were metal working tools. With that said, how many of you actually measure runout of your lathe spindle without any thing on it? How many of you also check deflection of the spindle (side to side play by moderate sideways pressure on th...

Bench Grinder for Lathe Chisels - 7 replies

Looking at getting a variable speed Delta 6 inch bench grinder (Model 23-196). Only $79.98. Wheels are 3/4” wide, and I would replace one with a white wheel. Speed goes down to 2000 rpm per listed specs. Anyone use one of these for grinding lathe chisels? If so, how does it work at lowest speed? I think most slow speed grinders are at 1750...

Jet 1221 or Delta 46-460 - 18 replies

I can get a new Delta 46-460 for around $180 less than a new Jet 1221vs. I like to turn bowls within the ranges of those lathes, as well a boxes, goblets and basically everything else (no need for any greater lenght), including pens. I have the lathe tools and a Nova G3 chuck so the money saved is not needed for accessories. If you have any ...

Jet 1221vs Mounting - 4 replies

Awaiting shipment of Jet 1221vs and would like to make a wood stand for it before I recieve it. Question: how many mounting holes to mount the lathe to the table or stand are on each side? For example, are there 4 on each end for a total of 8, or 2 on each end for a total of 4? Thanks.

Jet 1221vs Measurement? - 1 reply

Am awaiting delivery of a Jet 1221, and I thought I would build a stand for it. I got the basic measurements of the lathe; however, I need another measurement. Can someone please tell me the measurment from the base of the lathe (where it sits on the bench) to the spindle. I’m trying to get my stand to the right height for me.

Harbor Freight Lathe (#34706) as My Ultimate Lathe - 21 replies

I recently bought a HF lathe model # 34706, thinking I could always upgrade. I’ve been using this lathe almost daily and have turned bowls, finials and boxes with it. It has a 3/4 hp motor, with 12” swing x 33 3/8”. Runs great so far. I keep thinking how can this lathe be so good for as little money as they go for. I truly hope...

Vintage Craftsman Bandsaw # 103.24280 - 2 replies

I have this vintage craftsman bandsaw model # 103.24280 that I sort of inherited. Have had it for about 3 years and have finally gotten around to tuning it up. It is my understanding that it is from around 1952. It was manufactured by King Seeley Corp. It is pretty much all original, even with an open 1/3 hp motor. Size is 12”. Now that...

Harbor Freight Mini Lathe 65345 - 13 replies

Curious about the Harbor Freight Mini lathe 65345. For those who have one or have used one, please comment on the larger items you have turned on them. Any issues with larger items, such as bowls?
