« Part 1: Woodcraft Sharpening Class Part 2 of Sharpening Center series Part 3: Contact Cement & Clamping Cauls »

Today I began making my own strop.

A few weeks back I had purchased from Woodcraft a nice sheet of prepared leather for making into a strop. The instructions stated that the smooth side was for use with a strop paste compound whereas the rougher side was for use with the crayon type micro-fine honing compound.

I sliced the leather piece into two halves. I took a scrap piece of cherry hardwood and cut it to a size that was just smaller than the two leather halves. I hand planed the surfaces and edges of the cherry. I have all the part ready now for gluing together with contact cement. I do that task tomorrow.
