I made twenty cutting boards for Christmas gifts this year. I choose a Woodsmith plan as my basis for its design. My primary wood was 8/4 rough sawn cherry. After cutting the long timber into manageable lengths I milled them four square: a flat surface with an edge square to it and then passed that through my thickness planer. I then ripped strips 1 1/8 inches wide so I could then rotate them 90 degrees. I then glued those pieces together into panels. From here I milled a surface flat and then passed that through my thickness planer again.

I use a contrasting hardwood like hard maple to make the bottom splined edge and the top end handles.

This was a fun project to make in my shop.
