Vacuum to Sander - 7 replies

I’m looking for a solution more elegant than duct tape. I want to adapt a Fein Turbo 1 vacuum tool adapter (1”ID) to a Makita sander port (7/8”OD). I’m thinking about wrapping something around the sander so the hose will make a snug friction fir. Maybe something like a thick, very wide rubber band or possibly tape.Another idea would be to slit a...

Neutrik Plugs - 6 replies

Anybody do what this guy did and replace the factory cords with pigtails? I’m setting up a vacuum to work with all my power tools and am thinking this would be convenient. Also below is a pic from Amazon of the female plug. Thanks.

Drum Sander Conveyor Belt Wrinkling - 4 replies

I’ve got an older model Performax/Jet 22-44 Drum Sander. I was running some boards through yesterday and the conveyor belt started folding over onto itself. Everything else looks normal. I haven’t started taking it apart yet. The belt is an aftermarket one that is noticeably thinner than the original. I’ve been running it for three years with ...

Lie Nielsen Chisels - 13 replies

I was fortunate enough to get a set of Lie Nielsen bench chisels. The sides of the chisels are sharp enough to cut my fingers. Anybody else had this problem? How did you fix it? Thanks

FWW Crossgrain glue up? - 7 replies

I’m looking at a small silverware tray that Christian Becksvoort featured in FWW #274 Nov/Dec 2017. The bottom is glued from underneath directly to the sides. It seems like this would create a cross grain situation that would fail due to differential expansion. Can anybody explain why this joint wouldn’t fail? Please don’...

Lie Nielsen bevel edge chisel - 2 replies

I’m organizing my hand tools and want to include a tray for a set of Lie Nielsen bevel edge chisels. My problem is that I don’t own them yet. I plan to finish the tray and order then chisels. Their website lists the length as about 9”. Can anyone mind telling me the diameter of the handle and advising how accurate “abo...

Finishing Drawers (Different Question) - 3 replies

This isn’t the usual “finish or no finish” question on drawers. I’ve read the threads where folks present the merits of both approaches. I’m planning to spray lacquer on a cabinet that I’ve built. (Sapele face with maple sides). When it comes to the drawer, I want to spray the face and wax the rest. I...

Seeing the backside - 3 replies

I wanted to share a tip that works for me. When cutting out dovetail waste, I want to stay off the baseline and avoid a mishap. I keep the show side to me and put a mirror on the backside. This helps reassure me that I’m not cutting into the good material. I’m also a fan of the blue tape for marking purposes. Hope somebody finds ...

Proud Dovetails - 13 replies

I’m working on a small case with proud dovetails. I’m planning to finish it with Danish oil, a few coats of garnet shellac as a toner followed by lacquer. I’m contemplating the Danish oil and first coat of shellac before glue up in order to avoid a mess with glue squeeze out. Anybody have any experiences they can share? Not tha...

Paste Wood Filler - 9 replies

I was hoping for your thoughts on using paste wood filler. I’m planning to finish a table out of virola. 1. Paste wood filler before or after assembly? Seems it might be harder to sand out after assembly. 2. Dye/stain before or after paste wood filler? I’ve read both being recommended. I’m thinking about using dye for the fir...

Reversible glue joint setup - 5 replies

I’m trying to figure out how to use a CMT reversib glue joint bit. The finished boards are flush, but when I look at the edge of the joint, there are two 1/32” gaps where the boards come together. I’m using a Jessem fence with the outfeed shimmed 1/16” from the indeed fence. Any ideas on how to get the gap out? Thanks!

Iron stain on cherry? - 6 replies

I’m making a cherry shelf. I used a steel combination square to check alignment during glue-up. In doing so, I briefly set it on some wood I had moistened earlier in the process. Looks like that was all it took…I’ve got the neatest little stain that could have been stamped from the bottom of my square. It isn’t in a n...
