First Dovetail

My first dovetail. I cut the pins and nibbled out the waste between them on the table saw. I cut the tails on the band saw and removed the waste between them with a chisel after drilling out some of the waste. The wood is some scrap 2×4 planed to about 1-1/4” x 3-1/4”. I have this magnifier and used it when cutting on the bandsaw. The big hole in the center tail is a screw hole from this wood’s previous life.

Not perfectly square and a few small defects, but not too bad. If you can make it out, the fuzzy last photo is a 10” square showing the inside angle of the joint is a bit less than 90 degrees – the gap is 1/16” or so. We won’t talk about how much time I spent on it, however (although that included tuning up my new bandsaw).

Nicely done. I haven’t made through dovetails yet, but I hope mine look as good as yours.

very cool. this is one of those things where only experience can get you to better and easier results… keep at it, and in no time you’ll be popping those out without paying much attention to it ;)
