« Part 2: So far my favorite hand tool. Part 3 of My Journey into a Hand Tool Wonderland. series Part 4: Electrolysis Rust Removal Science Project »

While sifting through a tool bin at an antique store near me, I came across a rust try square that looked like it could clean up nicely, so I took the $3 risk.

I sanded the rusted cast iron base with 220, and used electrolysis to remove the rust on the rule. The ruler has a bit of wear on the tips but the edges are dead square. The spirit level in the base is still in great condition. After sanding and scraping the gunk, I gave the base a new coat of gloss black paint.

The blade is a Mohawk with etched markings up to 1/64, the base has no markings so its hard to tell what make it is.

Nice refurb! Is it square? I bought a 16” machinists square at HF, and when I checked it for square right out of the package, it wasn’t. I was able to get a small flat file in the blade slot and knock off some metal on a small pad in the slot, one on each end. It tuned right up!

Yeah it is square, at least over about 10” or so its on for about the width of a .5 pencil ink. The corners are a bit worn out so eventually I’ll have to replace the rule, but I love the heft.

Have your say...
