I began the construction of an Allen Models Fitchburg Northern 2-6-0 live steam locomotive in early 2014. I built the tender first in order to develop my machining skills and began the loco in early 2016. A train club (Northeast Florida Live Steamers and Railroaders, Inc.) member talked me into joining with him in building a pair of H.K.Porter 0-4-0T battery-powered steam look-alikes “in order to have something to play with until we can get our steamers running....”. The tender (coal car) deck is edge-glued red oak with semi-gloss polyurethane finish. The two tool boxes are black walnut from my scrap box—certainly not prototypical but beautiful, indeed!

My Porter was completed in late December 2018, to the neglect of my live steam loco build. Have a look on Facebook “Northeast Florida Live Steamers” for more information.

My steam loco is up on its wheels, suspension, brakes, rods, cylinders, valve gear complete, boiler on hand, and I just finished machining the second of the two crossheads. I hope to raise steam by Thanksgiving 2019.

We live in a retirement community with a fully equipped workshop club: Powermatic PM2000B table saw, 12 inch DeWalt miter saw, Jet and Powermatic air filters and dust collectors, Craftsman 12 inch band saw and 6x48 belt/disk sander, Craftsman wood lathe, scroll saw, drill press, numerous hand and power tools; Maximat 7 metal lathe/milling machine with every accessory imaginable, Myford ML-7 metal lathe with milling attachment and numerous accessories, three drill presses, power hacksaw, Grizzly mtal worker (forming rolls, shear and brake). I have at home a chinese 9x20 lathe which I have upgraded for improved accuracy, drill press, rotary table, micrometers, parallels, taps, dies, reamers, etc.

My wife and I just completed the modifications and refinishing of my mother’s cypress porch swing. Too long for my sister’s new front porch, we cut off one-third, reattached the armrest, and created a chair from the cut-off part. An oscillating tool with sanding attachment made sanding the slats almost bearable. Semi-gloss spar varnish polyurethane finish.
