Metal shavings. Ugh. - 6 replies

Any tips on getting metal dust off of tools? This is taking forEVERRRRRR. Mostly just hand tools (chisels, hammer, etc), a little bit on the base of my drill press and lathe. It’s so fine that wiping it off seems to be the only option? Any tips for getting rid of the shavings/dust if I come across it on a motor or something?

Recommended work table hight - 4 replies

It’s about time to get rid of my old POS work table and I was considering making it myself. The problem there is I’m pretty tall and I’ve never quite found a working height that felt comfortable. Since I am thinking of making it myself, I was wondering if there was some golden rule for how tall the table should be for bette...

Making a floor lamp - 4 replies

I’m trying to make a floor lamp using a cedar post (a little over 6’, I’ll probably leave it at least 5’6”), and I’m not sure how to run the wire… I would love to bore through the center, but have no idea how that could be done. If it can’t be done I have a few other ideas I can try out, I just...

To MacGuyver, or not to MacGuyver... That is the question. - 5 replies

I lost the yellow safety tab that clicks into power switch for my lathe (sorry, I don’t know the terminology). Does anyone know where I can get a replacement? Or is it possible to make one? And yes, I have been using a tab from another tool in the meantime, I just want a more permanent fix. Thanks!!!

Non-toxic finishes? - 6 replies

A friend of mine wants me to make him a few smoking pipes and I had a question… Is butchers block oil safe to use? My gut tells me no, so I got some mineral oil I can use instead if needed. Side note: Any wood recommendations would be greatly appreciated! So far I’m gravitating towards cherry and walnut.

Ideas for cheap work space??? - 3 replies

Thicker saw blade - 11 replies

I’m wanting to start making some tongue and groove stuff, and heard someone mention a “dido” blade? I’m sure I’m remembering it wrong, but apparently it’s just like any other table or chop saw blade, just a lot thicker. Am I imagining all of this? If not, where the deuce can I find one and what is it call...

Building a cabin... Thoughts? - 6 replies

Here is the skinny: I want to add a cabin to a plot of land that already has one house. It is my property with mineral rights and I mainly want to know if adding another living structure will alter taxes or anything else in some bizarre legal way? My hope is to keep bills for both homes together. We have natural gas and well water, so electri...

Dry vs. Wet sanding - 9 replies

The more I dive into tutorial videos and such, I see and hear about more and more people wet sanding their work. What are the advantages? (It’s sanding with oil and NOT water, right?)

Economically friendly wood - 16 replies

Anyone have any tips on how to get my greedy hands on some decent wood for a reasonable price? I’m cranking out projects like crazy and just can’t afford to be buying these expensive blanks :/. I have easy access to some mediocre oak and cedar, but I just loooove how some of the higher-end woods look. It just seems like they cut s...

Keeping my tools clean - 11 replies

Well, I’m basically in my shop 24/7 lately and since my favorite tool is the lathe, I tend to dirty up my chisels quite a bit. Now, my sets are not exactly high quality, but hey, they’re still mine! It’s hard to explain, but wood dust just about cakes the tips and I literally have to scrape it off after use. I’m guessi...

Carbide vs. traditional? - 22 replies

So I finally got my hands on my first carbide cutter, and I keep finding myself using it more for smoothing parts out rather than design. I know it has to be kept flat, and I’m getting more used to that by the day, but it seems like the negative outweighs the positive? What are everyone’s thoughts on carbide vs. traditional chisels?

Holiday gift ideas for a noob??? - 9 replies

So I’m cranking it into high gear and starting my Christmas projects, but as I am still relatively new to turning wood I was wondering about some turning kit or other basic ideas? (And I know about pens already! XD)

Health-safe sealer? - 2 replies

I know about butcher’s block oil (I think that’s it, right?). Are there any other comparable stains, sealers, waxes or anything else? I’m also looking for something that can be used in a smoking pipe, so preferably something that is fire/heat resistant??

Project pictures are sideways??? - 9 replies

Does anyone know why some of my project pictures won’t appear the way they are supposed to? Most of my pictures are rotated around to be in landscape format. I’m assuming it is the LJ site doing this? I even tried rotating the files before uploading them and it still came out sideways…

A quick turning question - and an introduction I guess - 16 replies

Hey, all! I’m new to woodworking and am super excited about getting dirty and having fun in my shop… There is one catch though; I am one clumsy foooool. Don’t worry, I always wear my safety equipment and watch what I’m doing, bla bla… That being said, I’m fine with th BASIC safety guidelines, but one thing...
