I'm having a problem getting a plane iron to stay set. - 12 replies

I’ve been working on my second wooden plane and have run into a problem. The plane iron will not stay set with the wedge seated in place. There seems to be a good fit with even pressure but once I start making passes over a board the iron slides back inside. I am out of the shop for the night but plan to continue trouble shooting tomorrow....

School Taught VS Self Taught - 57 replies

I have been spending a lot of time lately considering the benefits of woodworking school. I know I want a career in woodworking and I know I can get into it whether I go to school for it or not. What gets me is the learning curve. I have been putting in about 15-20 hours a week for the past 8 months and have made some decent progress in developi...

Is this purpleheart? - 14 replies

I was rummaging through my lumber a few days ago and came across this board at the very bottom of a stack of santos mahogany. It is 9/4×8” x 9’ and I was hoping to save myself some gluing by cutting a set of legs out of it…cut the appropriate length and it smelled a lot different then expected and it had a purple tint to i...

Which wood smells the best? - 56 replies

My shop time today consisted of milling a number of 5/4 santos mahogany boards to my desired dimensions. This stuff is pretty rough on the lungs so I am careful to wear my mask when cutting it…but it smells great! It is similar to vanilla but with a little pepperness. Hickory comes in as my second favorite. Oak…I really don’t l...

What kind of wood is this? - 8 replies

I picked some boards recently and am not sure if the guy I bought them from was correct as to what species of tree the lumber came from. He told me it is white oak…the guy has a lot of wood that he purchased from an urban lumber guy in Southern California. It looks like it has some characteristics of quatersawn oak but it also shares chara...

It’s 6:30 a.m. and I am sitting on my couch with my left eye partially swelled shut and a terrible rash covering half of my upper body. Table Top Finish- Polycrylic and Polyurethane - 3 replies

I’m working on a 42” round table right now and have a few questions about finishing the dining surface. I am pretty new to woodworking and have decided that my next project is going to be a circular table but I am working with a limited knowledge and a limit in tool capabilities.
