The start up

Been sitting on some 8/4 Maple and the Moxon hardware for a month or better. I have worked out a sketch to build. So off to the shop.
Rectangle Font Parallel Pattern Slope

Started out with 2 boards, one at 4' and one at 6' both needed a flat square edge. I do not have a jointer, so I used a hand plane (Miller's Falls #14) and started shaving the edge. I got it flat according to my straight edge. Checked square and was a little off, so back at it. Finished for that evening, a workout for sure.
Wood Flooring Floor Hardwood Water

Back out to the shop this evening, used a hand saw to cut the rear chop out, tad bit out of square. Took that over to the chop saw (not a sliding one, only cuts 6") trimmed the ends square, rolling the board at the end of the cut. Then cut the front chop to length, chop saw again.

Set the table saw up and ripped to the widest width I could cut, there was a slight taper in the lumber. Both chops sized. Next was to rip the 4' board into strips 1-5/8" (required 3 rips). Ran those through the planner to remove saw marks. Flipped to the side and ran the other edges through for a good glue up. Cut those to length (6) total.

Decided to add a couple of accent strips for the top. Walnut works, ripped a couple of strips from a 4/4 board, ran through planner for square edge and remove saw marks, along for the glue up later.

More lay out, I cut the rear chop 4" longer so I can create some tabs on the bottom for clamping to the bench. Think a fostner bit will work for a radius the cut the upper part out at the band saw.

Still need to lay out some dog holes, may be best to drill those before I glue up the top. Drill press is so much more accurate. And lay out a couple of mortise for the back legs, think I'll make those a through mortise and possibly use a wedge to lock in place, add some charm to the top.

And the holes in the chop need to be laid out, and drill a pilot hole through each. Then there will be a mortise apron on the sides and across the back. Have my work cut out on this one. Some power tools some hand tools.

Looks like a pretty solid start, Eric. Some days I can spend more time selecting lumber than making any "real" progress.

Thanks Dave, I can relate to selecting woods. This one was easy, it sat on the bench for the last month staring at me while I worked on the swap items. The Maple was chosen just for this small bench.

Thanks Ryan, it should work out well for me. Bringing a surface up to my forearms when bent 90 degrees at the elbow. And I need a good vise in the shop to.

Good progress. The walnut adds a nice accent to the maple. Good to see that there will.continue to a steady flow of folks building really nice beaches.

As Dave P said, once you get past lumber selection, then you can start the project. We build what we need.

Earl, thanks. This is going to be a practice run for a bigger bench. With a leg vise.

Dave D. Yes that is the fun part, building the things we need in the shop. And other projects too.

Great start. You are laying down the foundation for a perfect vice.

Liked how you worked around not having a jointer with that antique Miller Falls hand plane. What size is it?

I have an old Delta 6" jointer that I bought in 2017 for $200 in pristine condition. It was made in the USA
It works like new.

The rollers in my Dewalt planer don't grip any more and I stripped those cheep Phillips head screws that hold it together trying to replace them and I have to drive over 60 miles round trip to get it fixed.

I've been using hand tools like you to work around it.

Thank goodness for old tools that are still available at good prices, I hope.

Splinter, thanks. I picked that up down in Jackson, MS last month visiting the daughter.

Thanks James, the front and rear chops are 7-3/8" x 22" I will put a chamfer on the front chop. The plane is a #14C, once I put an edge on it, cut like a charm. And it fits nicely in my hands, not terribly heavy either.

I like your plans, I am anxious to see it done and how it works.

Yolanda, thanks. Keep watching, I'll post more as I work on it.

Today was yard eork, so not much shop time. I did work on the layout for the vise hardware. Was stumped a bit with the legs and aprons, so they don't interfere with the hardware or the dog holes.

Very nice lumber you're using there Eric. An interesting project to follow too.

Dave, thank you. I wanted to use hardwood for this little bench.

The Heart of the Moxon

After some careful layout for the bench top, position of the legs, aprons and dog holes, so the threads do not interfere with anything. I set out get the working part of the Moxon set up.

Used a fostner bit to get a radius near the bottom of the rear chop, left 2" at bottom to use clamps to hold this small bench down. Off to the bandsaw to cut the remainder out. Clamped it vertical to the bench and cleaned up the saw marks.

Over to the drill press to drill out the holes for the threads in both chops, with a fostner bit. Had to use a file and small sanding drum to make the holes just a tad bit larger.

After I had the threads fitting nicely, I started on the back of the rear chop. Instead of drilling a counter bore, I chose to chop out a mortise for the nut. Think about 20 minutes each, yea they fit snug.

The back of the front chop needed to have the holes tapered from side to side, used a gouge to chop a slight angle about 2/3rds of the way through. Test fit, works fine even when the chops are not parallel. (Reason for the tapered hole).

I then took the front chop off and back to the drill press, drilled (2) 7/8" dog holes 12" on center, 1-3/4" deep. I am debating to place an angled relief on the top leading edge of the front chop. Have to think about that.

I then put the chops together, tightened the vise and grabbed a hand plane to even both surfaces to match.

And just a bit of a mess on the floor and press, for those that like to see chips and shavings.

The next steps are to get dog holes drill for the bench portion, and drill some dowel holes to keep the top lined up during glue up, and strengthen the rear corner where there will be a through mortise (maybe).

Thanks for looking, and comments are welcome.

Looks like it's coming right along, Eric! The one thing I really like about the Veritas Twin Screw hardware is the chain that couples the two screws together, so you can just wind one of them, and they both open or close together. Its easy enough to decouple them so you can skew the front chop, but I think I do that maybe once a year or so.

In any case, its looking like you'll have a nice little bench to put on your bench.

Top glue up and start of legs

Finally got back to this project. Last night I drilled out the dog holes on the press, easier to handle prior to glue up. Then started gluing up the bench top, a few stages so stuff would not slide around much. Let the two halfs set overnight.
Wood Flooring Floor Engineering Composite material

This morning I ran the two halfs through the thickness planner, had a couple of small ridges at the glue lines. Then glued the two halfs together. Off to yard work.

I had an idea about the legs and aprons. Organilly a tenon with a pin, (scratch that). Decided to incorporate a sliding dove tail.

Yesterday, work was a short day. So I managed to assemble a few things for the table saw. A auxiliary fence, making it taller, a tenon jig to slide over the auxiliary fence. And added an extension to the miter gauge, with a stop block.
Wood Table Gas Automotive exterior Motor vehicle

With the new gadgets for the table saw I cut the tenons for the legs. Originally I was going to use a through tenon into the bench, (scratch that, afraid it would split at the edge). So I cut the tenon half the top thickness. Shop made accessories worked great.

Then cut a larger tenon on the aprons. I will have to pare them down to create the dovetail pin. I laid out the tail on the legs, using a bradpiont bit at the drill press cleared out the bulk of waste. Then chisel and mallet to to get the narrow width of the tail and to depth. I still need to pare the angle to complete the tails. Then pare the tenons to fit.
Wood Table Rectangle Wood stain Hardwood

So far please with the project, a few sketches to get my started, but no definite plans. A few changes along the way after thinking about stress points that may fail down the road. And the top turned out great. I plan on installing the apron an 1-1/4" from the edges, which will allow use of clamps.

Thanks for reading, and comments always welcome.

More to follow.

Eric, terrific work on the Moxon. I think you'll really like having it. Sometimes it just makes sense to stand at a bench and do the work at above bench top level.

Sliding dovetails

I had roughed out the slot last night. So this morning a little more layout and started cutting the dovetails tails. Found it easier to cut the pins first the fit the tail to the pin.

The pins are 1/2" long on the apron which is 2-1/2" wide, I made it a hunched pin (think that's the right term, making the tenon a little short).

Aprons to the legs
Rectangle Wood Grey Flooring Floor

Rectangle Wood Flooring Floor Hardwood

Next up was to layout the tenon on the aprons to fit into the rear chop. I made these 1" long. Off to table saw to cut. Laid out the mortise on the rear chop, cut and fit.
Wood Rectangle Grey Floor Flooring

During the layout of the tenon and the mortise in the rear chop. Decide to use a sliding dovetail to attach the legs to the bench. We have high humidity during the summer. The top is only 14" x 22" should not move much, but just in case it will not break anything. Also I will pin the tenon in the rear chop.
Wood Rectangle Table Flooring Plank

I may add a strip of Walnut to the rear of the top to cover the sliding dovetail. Also thinking about adding a strip on the ends of the top creating a spline. I'll see when I get to that point.

Overall liking the project, and learning how to make those sliding dovetails. I think when this is complete it will be sturdy, and a nice addition to the shop. It will sure beat using clamps holding parts to the bench.

Quite a jigsaw puzzle you're creating there. ;-) It'll be interesting to see it all come together, and it looks like that'll be pretty soon.

More sliding dovetails and glue up

Had the day off, so back at it again. I cut the pins and sliding tail for the legs. Bit of a tight fit, but that will work. Forgot to put a bit of paste wax in the joint prior to glue up, oh well.
Rectangle Wood Automotive design Flooring Font

Before I started the glue up, I took the time to run the ROS over the flat surfaces with 120 grit. Removed the pencil lines mainly.

Then glued the rear chop to the bench surface. Found just a little gap on the top surface after flipping it over.

Then proceeded to glue up the aprons, legs and tenon into the rear chop. A little persuading with the dice hammer. Then clamped up to set a bit.

A little final sanding and installed the hardware. Tested the grip, strong with no padding.

Fantastic moxon!
Its great to have used so many dovetails for a tool to help make dovetails.
Thanks for sharing.
