Second phase of the build started, managed to set sill beams, and framed up the platform. Need to install blocking tomorrow and the tie downs. There has been a lot of upgraded codes over the past few years. But working to get a particial framing inspection this week so I can install the decking and start in on the walls during the long weekend. At least that is the plan.
Another great weekend with the shop build, between the few times when the sky opened up with a downpour. Either way the platform is complete and ready for inspection. Next up sheathing and the deck boards.
Good productive day, columns set (both ends notched), beams set, walls set (end wall with overhead was rough, don't have the wing span). Tomorrow headers and top plates. Maybe I will get started on the deck boards.
Finished the rough openings for doors and windows, all headers installed, too plate nailed down and long walk braced. Looks like I need a day off to get the lawn mowed, better half keeps telling me about it. If I get time after maybe a do some organization around the build site. Have a big pile of drops and the lumber I used for the forms to load into the trailer and slide a lumber pile under the floor and off my lawn.
Been a slow week on the build, a little rain in the evenings, but enough of a break to organize the lumber piles, and get all of the waste loaded in the trailer. Had a decent evening today, so I managed to get just about all of the deck boards cut to length and notched as needed around the columns. 2 boards left to cut at the ends, and 2 rips, the outer edges of the porch area are picture framed, it just looks so much more professional. I need to go back and round over the cut edges for a clean look, then screw them down.
I see you are working on a shop. What are the dimensions? I built my shop about 10 years ago by extending the roof line of my house to cover a 13×28 area behind the garage. I did all the work myself except setting the trusses on the roof. It is smaller than I would like but I can always bring my bigger projects out into the garage. The total cost after the sheetrock and electrical was about $7,000 but required about a year to complete. I also added a storage shed behind the shop to house my lumber. I generally get lumber by the unit and I could never store that much in my shop.
The shop footprint is 16' x 32' , I will have a 5' porch on one end, time for thinking and fresh air. The interior will be 27' long, so 430 SQ ft floor. Designed a loft at each end 10' deep. The roof line is a gambrel. So I will have storage and I can put the compressor and future dust collector up off the floor. Lots of windows and a 10' x 8' overhead door. At some point I will finish out the inside.
I started the build over Memorial Day weekend. It has been me myself on the build, I will have to get a few guys to help with swinging the trusses. The plan is to have the shell and electric done by Labor Day. There is a second utility pole on the lot so I will have the electric company run a underground line and have a separate meter just for the shop.
There is a blog for the first part of the build.
Plus I can transfer the pool to the shop and run some low voltage lighting from there.
Nice work on the shop build! Feels good, eh? I love the progress. That was me two years ago…time flies. I'm still improving my shop and haven't started the boat build yet, but loving every minute of it.
Yes it feels good to get this long awaited shop going. I was out of town for a week, so not really any progress. I did manage to get some work done yesterday, sheathing on the wall. Might be a bit slow this week, few other projects to do around the house, and the hot humid heat.
Been a slow week on the build, (yard work had to come first) I managed to get the porch floor completed, picture framed the outer edges, looks so much better than seeing the end grain. And I started to mill the threshold for the overhead door out of pressure treated 5/4. I wanted a slight slope from the door, and that will also work out down the road with a ramp. I will try to post photos over the weekend.
Been a good day on the build, framed up the lofts and layed the flooring, those full sheets kicked my butt. And a few odds and ends needed to be tighten up.
Thinking I should get the truss layout done, and start building those this week. And figure out the height needed for the landing pad for the steps. I will have to pour that over a weekend day.
Better get the shutters batten down. I see a storm coming your way. I have been busy the past week removing my deck. It was redwood that was installed 28 years ago. The guy that installed it didn't treat anything as he built, so I couldn't get to a lot of places with deck stain. As a result, the wood was beginning to rot. I plan to replace it with Trex.
Overall good weekend on the build, vacations and family visits out of the way, back to work on the shop. Walls sheathing, loft and floor, window and door openings flashed. Took time today to finish up a few odds and ends, and did my truss layout.
View of loft, bottom cord of truss plus an extra 2×6 will make up the tripple for the beam, then I can take out the support. The sides of the loft were left open to drop the lines for both dust collection and air lines.
I covered the loft floor in preparation for the forcasted rain the next few days. Not so much worried about the main floor, since I can use a big du from work once I get the roof dried in and windows and doors installed. Bring it down to about 20% humidity inside.
I did notice a mistake with the top plate, I should have extended the ends to allow the rake fascia to land on. Minor thing to handle, just have to tear some of it off.
I even thought ahead an installed blocks for a porch swing (I will have to build yet, but a nice finishing touch) to sit a relax or think.
Thanks for following and all of the nice comments.
Thanks Ed, my foot print is 16×32, but the inside is only 27' giving me 430 SQ ft. I will end up with about 150 SQ ft on each loft for storage. Getting excited to get this build done to set up shop.
At least with a deck, you are probably closer to the ground. But that is a good size deck to tackle. The Trex will be nice, just cost more in material to include the framing. I always placed the joist on 12" centers. Good luck on your build.
I have a rain day here. But my chalk lines are still on the floor for the truss layout, hair spray worked like a charm.
Good day on the build, all gusset blocks cut, and top cords of the trusses. Slow process in building the trusses, so I only put 4 together today. But I stepped back and set one of the table trusses and sheathed the larger part, still have a few small pieces to set.
Back at it in the morning, and hope to set some trusses and build at least 1 barge rafter.
Sounds like you are coming along with your project. I got all my rafters set and most of the blocking. Yesterday I attached two cables at each end of the deck and anchored them back to the house. That will remove any sway. I am about 62 inches off the ground and 5 4X4 posts to hold it up. I think that should hold the load.
Thanks Ed for the comments. Sounds like you have a floating deck, other than the 4×4 post. So either you are preventing sway, or uplift, maybe both. I spent time out there in Southwestern Wyoming, Green River. And I remember have some high winds there
Managed to make my goal this weekend, 1/3rd of the trusses built and set, to include one end wall with sheathing. Starting to really look like the mini barn I was going for. Plus as a bonus, I have all the parts cut for the reminder of the trusses. So a very good weekend. I'll have to see what I can get preped this week, for next weekend.
Prep has been good the past few days, finished up building the last of the trusses this evening. The other night it was cleaning up and organizing to have room along the wall to stand them. Ready to start setting them tomorrow starting with the gable truss and barge rafters. Including the sheathing. Then set the remainder on Saturday. At least that's the plan, weather permitting. The only thing I need to work out is 5 of the center trussese which are in the open area, safely. I am only a one man crew, and I keep thinking about different ways to roll them.
Yes, all trusses set, both barge rafters build, sheathing installed on the gable ends. Still have to install some blocking in the gables and build a triple 2x beam for additional support under one of the lofts, I am past max on the span for a 2×6. Then I can move on to the roof sheathing.
I at least want to get the felt on to dry in. I will have to build the witches hat along the sides. Looking to have a 12" overhang along the sides. Have to see how that part goes.
All in all a good weekend for the build, (with rain both in the morning and in the afternoon Saturday). Have to admit that open center kicked my butt. Not as young as I used to be. Walking the wall didn't really happen. 20 years ago, yea, no problem.
Thanks Ed, some days kick my butt. But I slow down and think it through when I come into a problem, such as raising those trusses. As for the building skills, been a carpenter for around 20 years, both in new builds ground up and remodels, did a lot of work in Wyoming for the gas companies. And I ran me own stuff while I was living in New York, while working for a contractor.
As for the design, I drew my own plans for the shop, revised a few times. But I also planned the build around the available sizes of the lumber, to eliminate some of the waste. Looks like I will have a few 2×6x16's left over. Everything thing else should be used up. My 6×10 trailer isn't even half loaded yet.
The build is slowing down a little, days are getting shorter, so I only have a few hours after work. But I am getting the rest of the blocking done on the trusses. Hope to take Saturday to get the majority of the roof sheathed, and felt installed. I have to work out the witches hat at the eve.
Spoke with my supplier for vinyl siding, 8 - 12 weeks out. So I need to get my order in Monday.
Accomplished my goal this weekend. Roof is sheathed and felted, stopped about a 1' above the too plate, so I have room to work in the witches hat at the eve, but I have it covered with felt, so hopefully the water stays out, looking like a rainy week ahead. No photos today since I worked until dark.
