Need to find a knurled tapped thumbwheel to make anti-rack device for vise? - 21 replies

The Diefenbach benches came with a nifty thumbwheel on each vise that resided in a forstnered hole on the vise. You could then spin it tight against the bench to prevent racking. I can’t find a big enough thumbwheel for this purpose. I’m thinking knurled thumbwheel 2” outer diameter and tapped for 1/4” or 5/8” all ...

What film is on my new to me Ulmia two cherries gouges? I am stumped. - 10 replies

Bought a set of Ulmia Two Cherries gouges on the bay. There’s some type of protective finish film on them that is coming off exposing shiny steel. I tried lacquer thinner, denatured alcohol then mineral spirits and it won’t come off. I’m starting to wonder if the prior owner put polyurethane on them? It sands off into a white ...

I need a clear base plate for Bosch RA1166 plunge base for 1617EVS - 9 replies

I want a clear base plate that will fit (pre-drilled) for the Bosch RA1166 plunge base that came with my Bosch 1617EVS. It would be awesome if it had the catch pin to fit porter cable style bushings (so the bushing catches on the indentation in the porter cable bushings). I have a clear plate for the fixed base but the mounting holes on the pl...

Just ordered an Infinity 40T Super General table saw blade to replace an aging Forrest Woodworker II - 15 replies

I’ve been a Forrest WWII user for many years. After sending my trusty blade for sharpening three times I am ready for something new and shiny. I did a lot of research including on Lumberjocks and settled on an Infinity blade, the blue one. Although I have dedicated cross cut and glue line rip blades, I am too lazy to change blades betwe...

Hand tool bag recommendations. thinking veto pro PAC xxl - 0 replies

Looking for a tool bag that will fit my dovetail and tenon saw, assorted chisels, mallet, block plane, no. 4 bailey, etc. I’m intrigued by the veto pro pac xxl but can’t tell if it would have enough room. I don’t want the planes and saws to bang around in the bag. I’m also considering the Klein canvas bag. No busines...

Did Garbanzo and RantingRich get kicked out and if so why? - 41 replies

What happened to RantingRich and Garbanzo? Did they run afoul of the site’s rules? I have a suspicion they are the same person given the content of the posts. I’m trying to figure out where is the line that shouldn’t be crossed that would get me kicked off. :). Thanks. Tom

Blood has to be at least 13,000 grit ... - 6 replies

So last night I was doing final honing on a plane iron on an 8K grit Norton dark orange water stone. I noticed that the swarf looked a bit too red. Yep, I sliced a bit of the tip of one of my fingers and I was bleeding all over the stone. What a finish though. At least comparable to a 13K stone. Maybe it’s the platelets? Should I in...

Help identifying this tool - 10 replies

Looks like a cross between a spokeshave and a travisher? it has a curved blade and what appear like a couple of bolts on the top that don’t seem to have a function as the blade is held by two other bolts that go through the body and into the curved blade. Maybe it is missing a part? I am stumped. Thanks. Tom

I'm now a believer in bevel grinding chisels and blades - 3 replies

I went to the Pt Townsend woodworking school to learn hnd cut dgovetails. Had a blast. One of the instruction sections involved bevel grinding a chisel with an 8” grinder and a white wheel and then taking a couple passes on Japanese stones to remove burr and to final sharpen the chisel. Wow. What a difference. The bevel grind offers two p...

Slowing down a 3450 rpm grinder with pulleys for putting a radius bevel on chisels and plane irons - 4 replies

I just scored a free fake 3/4 hp (5 amps) 8” grinder that runs at 3450 rpm. I want to slow it down to 1750 rpm or lower to put a radius grind on chisels and plane irons prior to sharpening. It is quiet so I am assuming it is some sort of induction motor so I don’t think I can slow it down with a rheostat. My thought is to build a p...

Humidor build - mahogany finished exterior but not interior? - 2 replies

I am in the process of building a Honduras mahogany humidor with dovetail construction. I want to build it entirely out of Honduras mahogany because it seems to have the same kind of humidity absorption as Spanish cedar and I don’t live in an area where bugs will get into my cigars. I plan on finishing the exterior with Shellac. No stai...

Grizzly G0513X2 band saw owners: how do you install a 1" blade? - 6 replies

Sorry for the endless questions. I have to carefully wrestle a 1” 1.3 tpi blade on my new Grizzly G0513X2 band saw. It gets stuck against the two metal plates that house the lower thrust bearing and also against the throat. That and trying to fit it through the blade guard makes it a long chore. I adjusted the thrust bearings as far bac...

I am selling three new band saw blades 93.5” for Delta 14” band saw without riser. These are brand new. Never been on a band saw. Two from Spectrum Supply and one from Iturra Design. All three have great welds. The green tags are from Spectrum Supply and the data is on them. 1. Iturra Design: Starrett Intense Pro Die 1/2”...

Grizzly G0513x2 dust collection. One port enough? - 2 replies

I plan on hooking up my Grizzly 17” band saw to my Oneida cyclone using expandable dust right hose. I am using a quick disconnect because the hose will share duties between the table saw and the band saw. I can’t run hard pipe to the band saw and I can only connect to one 4” port because of the orientation of the lower port a...

Delta 22-560 planer belt guard: is it safe to keep it off? planned obsolescense - 8 replies

The pulley on my Delta planer came loose and wobbled the belt off ruining the belt guard and the belt. Of course this model planer is now listed as obsolete and I can’t find anyone that still carries the blade guard. The blade guard looks like this and it covers the belt and the pulleys. I am wondering if the planer can be run without t...

For sale: Lie Nielsen dovetail saw 15 tpi with leather case. $100 obo - 3 replies

Thinning the saw till. An excellent LN 15 tpi dovetail saw with leather case. I literally cut three pins and tails with it. Slight oxidation on brass back. Comes with the box and LN documents. Grizzly G0513x2 bandsaw- will it tension a 3/4" 2-3tpi resaw blade? Thinner blades on blade guides? - 6 replies

Just ordered this band saw. I want to order a resaw blade but not a Timberwolf. More likely a Lennox bimetal for durability. Will this saw handle a 3/4” 2-3tpi blade? I.e. tension and track this width blade? If not bimetal then carbon? Also I want to get a 1/4” and 3/8” blades for curves/contours. Any concerns with the...

i am upgrading to larger bandsaw - Delta to Grizzly - 14 replies

My faithful Delta 14” bandsaw is getting replaced. I’m done spending money to try to get it where I need it to be. So it’s going on Craigslist and I am now seriously looking at the Grizzly G0513x etc. I think I want the one with the cast iron trunnions and the roller guides. Not sure about the foot brake although I imagine ...

Delta 14" band saw motor upgrade? Testing the existing 1 h.p. motor? - 12 replies

I am convinced my 14” Delta 28-280 platinum edition closed base 1 HP open drip proof motor doesn’t really put out 1 HP and I’m thinking of upgrading it to a 1.5 tefc motor. I think existing motor is an Emerson motor. It is a nema 56 frame and I think CCW rotation running at 1725 rpm. It does not have a riser as I don’t...

Delta 14" band saw woes - 18 replies

Hi! Brand new to LumberJocks although I’ve trolled many times. Love the site. My Delta 28-280 band saw won’t tension the blade anymore. I was tensioning the blade with stock adjustment screw and I felt a click. I checked the tension screw and but and it is not stripped and will compress the tension spring but the blade won’t...
