Well I mentioned in passing about how nice a stone wall would be in our family room with cabinets built-in on the sides. Didn’t really mean anything by it other than the fact I had seen it in home reno shows and magazines and liked it. The boss says “Think you can get it done before Christmas!!!”..... And so it began. Part 2: Cabinets and Books Shelf Construction

I decided to take the approach of constructing the built-ins as a set of base cabinets with bookshelves on top. For this project, there’s a real mish-mash of materials – mostly stuff I had on hand from previous projects or readily available and inexpensive at the big box stores so there’s birch ply, pine and mdf. I didn’t really care since it was all being painted anyways so material choice didn’t matter to me. Glad I made the bookshelves from pine and not MDF...

Part 3: Completed Project

Well, the project is now completed …..... finally….... This took a lot longer than anticipated, especially when you can only get an hour here and an hour there to work on it. But in the end, I love the way it turned out. Originally, I thought of floating shelves on either side of the stone fireplace but much happier that I went this route. The base cabinets offer so much more storage and the wife is filling them up already! She`s happy so I`m happy – at least that`s w...
